I have been thinking about trying MSG after finding out all the fearmongering about it is apparently bullshyt. I have never fukked with it because I heard it was dangerous as a kid, and so many labels say "MSG free" that shyt had me shook.

Now Im finding out that shyt is as good as, if not better than salt? Man... Do you use it in ADDITION to salt? Or as a replacement? I need to know if trying that shyt in rice or in a chicken seasoning mix or something is cool, or what. I don't know where to start. Is it good on anything salt is good on? :lupe:

MSG and salt are two different kinds of salt, but both are essential. I consider MSG to be background singers and table salt to be the lead singer.

Both are necessary; MSG helps items taste more like THEMSELVES, whatever you are cooking becomes more savoury and unctuous. Salt makes everything tastes better TOGETHER. Two different jobs.

When you see items advertised as MSG free, the item often doesnt have any MSG in it but is advertised as such for marketing purposes. Below is an example of 5 spice powder I found in my cupboard with "no MSG" on the bottle. It has 5 ingredients like its supposed to and would never have MSG in the first place. So its all marketing and capitalising on propaganda. Like gluten free ice cream for example

And yes u are correct, the MSG hate stems from racist propaganda of the 1950s, chinese ppl have been eating it for yonks and arent dropping over from MSG related deaths.

Alot of products that are considred low salt are just MSG products; because MSG doesnt taste salty manufacturers have been tricking people into buying it for years under another name. Thats why low salt seasoning doesnt taste that great because its not enough flavour even though the ingredients taste pronounced in the dish , you need table salt to bring it all together.

MSG is used in the cooking process only and is not used as a finishing salt to sprinkle on goods.

How to use it

I use it when seasoning meat but bare in mind my seasoning doesnt have any salt in it, I use pure onion powder, garlic powder etc. I then add salt when the food is cooking and I need to taste all together. I will then add more salt or msg as needed.

You can use MSG a little at a time with your usual seasoning and taste and add MSG and or salt as u go along so u can see the difference it makes.

here's a hawaiian poke bowl I made a few days ago. essentially, it's sushi in a bowl form. it was very good.

this contains rice with rice vinegar, mushrooms sesame seeds, avacado, cilantro, raw salmon, pinapples, soy sauce and spice mayo.

the ingredients probably sound weird, but it's a flavor explosion in your mouth. the sweet of the pinapples sets off the savory of the spice mayo and salty of the soy sauce.

I don't know why but I can't do the chunks of salmon like that, I tried, same thing with tuna. It just grosses me out pass a certain point like it's too rich.

This looks Amazing! I love Poke but I am too scared to make it on my own. The fish round these parts are not caught fresh. I wouldnt buy it from the supermarket, so im stuck hunting out a good poke restaurant.

Naw, u can buy the fish anywhere. I used to think u needed a specific caliber of fish, butt that salmon is regular from the grocery store. Just cut the skin off and dice it up.

The reason I started making my own poke is cuz they don't really have many restaurants that make it here. And the one I used to hit in China Town recently closed. Super easy to make this.

I got introduced to this when I lived in Texas. But for some reason, it's hard to find here.
