This won't end well....

why won't this end well.

a one bed apartment is 1700$ in the bad side of town. Tell me, how someone making 40K is supposed to afford that?

How is someone making 40K going to be able to afford a 500K 2 bedroom home?

20 dollars an hour is not the business guys.

Well, of course people with mediocre grades will have a harder time finding jobs.

But there have always been unmotivated C students, even before the recession, that's nothing new. Still doesn't change the fact that they economy screwed them over compared to unmotivated C students that graduated before the recession.

That's life, though.

I went the STEM route, because that's where my strengths lie. I'm a Pharmacist, and made 170k last year in Florida.

But, like @Robbie3000, I put a high value on education and it seems like the focus has shifted towards #get paid, #make money, #start a buisness. I see no reason to be so narrow minded. Why not major in modern dance...those jobs only pay 23k/year, but who cares, truthfully.

I rather stick to the basics, I'll tell any young person to do what they like and make the best of it...

Well, yeah, but that's in an extraordinarily expensive area where jobs pay more anyway. The cost of living on the coast is probably >90% of the country.

In Michigan you can find a 1br (heat and water included) for ~$500/mo (or less). $700-$900 would get you a nice apartment in a gated community, and if you're paying any more than that you may was well buy a house. For $1700/mo you can damn near buy a mansion.

A big issue is that kids these days are not interested in going into trades where people are needed and the pay grade is high. I know people who have spent 4-5 years and tens of thousands of dollars on University only to work part time hours or get a job outside what they studied because there are so many grads in their field while dudes I know who are dumb as bricks go to a technical institute for a year, take a years apprenticeship in welding/plumbing/boilermaker programs and come out making $40-50/hr by the time they're 22.

thing is.

Only professional jobs and Trades pay more than 50K a year. Teachers still only make 40K here. College professors make 60K.

Cable guys make about 20 an hour, and the vast majority of the jobs here are still in retail sales and food service.

this is it right here.

If I could do everything all over again, I would have gone int Rad-Tech. It's an 18 month program, and the pay is well above 60K starting. The top program is at a near-by community college, and while the admittance standards are high (high gpa is needed) i feel I would have made it.

18 months to make 80K sounds a lot better than 7 years of university education to make the same amount.

I'm not sure if that really happens anymore in general...

Also you have to remember building and maintaining houses fell off a cliff with the recession.

Skilled laborers are an aging part of the workforce and infrastructure will continue to require maintenance. It may not be the boom it was just a couple of years ago but there is and will be a strong demand for those proficient in trades.

Fact is we need some kids who want to become plumbers and electricians instead of them all thinking they're going to become doctors and lawyers.

lol at that crap? I made 40K when I was in college, and I barely could feed myself.

Maybe in those midwestern states, but 40k is not enough for anyone to live on in the coastal cities. No way.

I am a volunteer in a Tax preparer organization for poor families. We have a cut off at 51K for individuals. 51K is consider poor here.
40K is plenty. Theres two sides to living expenses. What you make and what you have to spend. Nobody told you to live in an expensive place. And in any case I have inlaws... whole families living comfortably on 40K. You being terrible with money and living in an expensive city doesn't make 40K unreasonable or unlivable.

I hear you man I really do. Our country moved away from trades a long time ago. Someone other than me was involved in the electric business and electricians were going home clearing 90-200k a year in the 80's and 90's early 00's.

wow... they get paid way more than up north. the chair of my dept. at school told me that they only were paid 60K, but that was a 8 years ago.

I also read that they recently passed legislation so that professors under the CS system now make 90k,

Also a lot of professor, whose salaries stated 27k probably work in other districts, cross town
