The fact him and to a lesser extent Pippen never won DPOY makes no sense
Its genuinely surprising that a guy who was good enough to be first team defense 8times and 7times second team never could win a single defensive player of the year. He was one of the greatest two way players in history and the best of the 2000s, just going by his stats, accolades and first team all nba and defensive selections

How good was he on defense? I see he has several defensive selections but never won the award for defensive player of the year once, was he the consensus best player in that era?

It can’t really be explained by a few highlight reels or stats. Your best bet to learn about Tim Duncan is to watch his old games. His game was a beautiful combination of patience, skill, subtle power/quickness, and seemingly always making the right plays and decisions.

His reign at the top was short like leprechauns.

Best player in the league from ‘03 to ‘05. Wasn’t better than Shaq in ‘02 even though he won MVP.
