See I don’t like saying this because Hell Rell and JR Writer were Dipset and they could rap and Juelz wasn't great but he had the Harlem swag when rapping. You’re looking from the inside in but looking from the outside is when you get perspective.
Bruh....they weren't the past crews we were used to seeing.

And lets be real. Many weren't on the inside. You being on outside was just as public to you as it was for me. But I was on the inside and saw the machine at work. I saw it change for the worse.

Ain't nobody want to hear dusty jazz samples, breakbeats and vinyl crackle in 2025 when you trying to decimate a fat assed thot on the dancefloor.

I expect those that have regional inferiority complexes due to a Source article from 1992 are gonna be in here clowning.
:dahell:??

I'm not from anywhere near New York but it's clear as day that NYC has it's own unique style that no one can replicate. Their accent, swagger and production style stand out no matter what kinda rap they're doing.

Agree, but every region evolved with their sound, while keeping their essence, but also it being accepted by the old guard... NYC didn't do that. Every time a fresh sound came around, they would receive hate for trying to copy other regions.. See ASAP, even Kid CUdi to an extent is moreso a NYC sound, pop albiet, but it feels like what was going on in the city in the underground scene a the time..
how is it evolution for other regions¿

what happened in NYC is what happened everywhere the flow & spread of sounds sped up as media became more instantly accessible & wide spread

folks just try to apply a different criteria for thee city

IDK, YG and Nipsey sounded like evolved west coast production. Same as a good portion of TDE. ATL shyt evolved from the crunk shyt and Jeezy shyt, to have the sound they’ve been running with for years. Those are the few I could think of right now.

The music that the youth was making was already drill-like in the same time period that Chicago drill was emerging and in the years leading up to it.

There was a wave of homegrown gangs like YGz, YBz, OY, OGz in the Bronx and Harlem and Hood Starz (Cho) and Wave Gang (Woo) in Brooklyn. This led to new gang wars, the influence of early YouTube and especially those Philly rappers, and NY-based hood/hip hop DVD’s like Smack, led to the WeMobbin series where a lot of this early proto NY drill was featured usually in freestyle form or in early poorly mixed and mastered tracks.

In that time Jadakiss “Child Abuse” beat went platinum every gang seemingly had their own version

When Chief Keef popped there was a huge gravitas because they was on the same shyt, with a similar look, he was the first authentic young nikka signed in a minute at the time labels weren’t investing in them. It was a blueprint that could be followed and that was relatable for NY youth at that time. It was the blog era and they were signing every man, 20 something year olds. Social media and virality and access to home production software and videos and shock value plus kids in real gang wars it opened up a way to get exposure and signed and diss the opps.

Also, that club shyt is pretty huge over the last few years in the East Coast music scene down to mainstream.

Why can't you just say they liked Keef,Reese and them and bit drill? So inspired by the style decided to try it they self:mjlol:

All this "bu bu but we was kind of already doing drill:mjgrin:" is nonsense lol.

If the question is their "sound" the answer would probably be sampling problems. But New Yorks trademark wasn't really their sound anyway. The trademark was the focus on lyricism. So how they lost it is they stopped focusing on lyricism because lyricism wasn't winning. They were known for sounding lyrical. Without that they have no quintessential sound.

Virginia. I still stand by Timbaland and then The Neptunes broke down regional sounds. Why? Because their sound couldn't be linked to any one region in particular. They were mandatory for nearly every album especially for hits. If you were an MC from NYC, chances are one of your singles were produced by them.

Dr. Dre's 2001 blowing up changed NYC too. NY artists were going to Dre or Scott Storch or Rick Rock for that Chronic 2001 sound.

i hear a lot more differences than similarities between old shyte & new shyte regardless of region

like i said folks overemphasize the changes in NYC & act like there is some sort of undisturbed continuity everywhere else

no sense in arguing opinions..........
