They never did.

90s they had boom bap (Wu tang/Nas) mainstream sample (Jiggy era) then Ruff Ryder Casio sound. Tribe (jazz samples)

2000s soul chopping cause of Ghostface supreme clientele then Jay made it mainstream with blueprint due to Just Blaze and Ye. And dipset had their spin on the sampling
Dipsets rise came from messageboard popularity unlike the others mentioned.

Back in the days, in order to get big in NYC you followed the order of

1. Mixtapes creating local street buzz
2. Hit up the blacjk New York clubs (they have been on the decline since 2001)
3. NYC radio
4. Perform at the Tunnel

That was it. Dipset didn't take that course. The Lox did and we saw the clear difference at Verzez.

DipSet was NY fell off rap.

Look at the cruise that came out of New York prior to that. Nice to see Jim Jones and them at the tunnel all the time. They were on the outside, looking in of all these groups. An entire crew with none of them niqqaa could spit outside of Cam. It was all floss and being dripped….nothing else.

That shyt was NYC fell off rap.

Even 50s rise. He biggest organic hit in the city was How to Rob. He had to get producers from outta town and got bigger from demand outta towners than from his own city who ended up playing catch up.

I was in the entourage of one of the city’s top three DJs from the early 90s on. I saw how New York changed.

Honest question for fans of the genre. I expect those that have regional inferiority complexes due to a Source article from 1992 are gonna be in here clowning. But for actual fans what led to the loss of the regional sound and why hasn't it been updated?
NY has many regional sounds

Yall just don’t like it

/end thread

WRONG nikka :deadrose:
Correct. I was in culture club in Brooklyn in 94 when it was my man, Jay & foxy had a showcase. Kap was the DJ that night and Wendy Williams hosted the event. this was at a time that Jay and foxy Street team were in full effect and “ain’t no niqqa “ was starting to bubble. I was taking a break from school which is why I was there. My man, Jay and foxy were all on the level at that time. Unfortunately, my people didnt have the discipline that Jay and foxy had because they were serious while mh man’s and then were getting drunk backstage drinking Moet. My boy got on stage all drunk, slurring his words and shyt. After that foxy and Jay came out and killed it. I do have a funny story about Wendy and her husband trying not to pay Kap until my boy and ended up being ran out the club after my people gave them a message they couldnt refuse. :russ:

The biggest issue was my boy could not get past being on those streets as a Nostrand Avenue niqqa. Meanwhile Kap goes on to DJ at the Palladium with flex before moving into the tunnel. And I saw how what he & Flex spun showed who was next in New York. And when they both got in the tunnel to see foxy, and Jay on the stage was a graduation that made them New York official along with the help of being on radio (via Flex). That was how shyt worked in New York back in the day. On damn near every block there was a camp or clique of MCs all trying to make it record business. And it had to take that track from mixtape, your street team, playing at the local clubs, the radio, then the tunnel..

I was in big kaps entourage. I was at the tunnel every Sunday with him and flex. Who are you to tell me I’m off when I saw this play out for numerous New York MCs?

Yet you are here to tell ME that I’m off. :heh:

Congratulations. You are on my dikk.

People saying the Dips are wrong NYC still sounded like NYC until Bobby Smurda. That’s when their artist started to shift to drill but To me Sheff G and Sleepy Hollow make NY music still.

Bruh...the make up of that group was an entire crew who couldn't spit outside of Cam. That aint a NY sound. That was NY fell off rap.
Being someone who saw first hand the Mobb Deeps, Wu Tangs, Boot Camp Cliques, Bad Boy play out from the ground floor to stars...and then seeing Dip Set. Dip Set?

Nah dog....that was a major decline.

This Cream of Wheat nikka talking about practically a whole different generation. Dips was catching steam when The Tunnel was on its last leg. By that time you were already 45 :deadrose:

DipSet wasn't good enough to be on the Tunnel stage and the entire NY way of moving up the chain had changed by the time DipSet blew up.

I get that you want to leave here to tell me I'm wrong, but you act as if I died and didn't witness the evolution. I was there.

The final death nill was the hiring of Ebro.

See I don’t like saying this because Hell Rell and JR Writer were Dipset and they could rap and Juelz wasn't great but he had the Harlem swag when rapping. You’re looking from the inside in but looking from the outside is when you get perspective.

A Villa Straylight.
Gatekeeping was another gripe as you just stated. Not putting anyone on if they weren’t from NYC, even if you were dope to have a wack artist take that slot. Still doing that shyt today calling upstate rappers Canadians. Smfh
How does that lead to loss of regional sound?
