This just seems like gripes other regions might have had. How does gatekeeping cause one to lose their sound? Wouldn't that cause them to not be influenced by other sounds?

Gatekeeping was another gripe as you just stated. Not putting anyone on if they weren’t from NYC, even if you were dope to have a wack artist take that slot. Still doing that shyt today calling upstate rappers Canadians. Smfh

the sound has changed everywhere*
Agree, but every region evolved with their sound, while keeping their essence, but also it being accepted by the old guard... NYC didn't do that. Every time a fresh sound came around, they would receive hate for trying to copy other regions.. See ASAP, even Kid CUdi to an extent is moreso a NYC sound, pop albiet, but it feels like what was going on in the city in the underground scene a the time..

The mixtape era changed ny rap forever

The majority of that eras heavily promoted rappers failed whereas most of what the south put out worked

Lack of balance
Kids in the city adapted to what they heard

Are you from NY? Do you live here? Nothing about NY drill has anything to do with Chicago drill sonically. Drill music has evolved from songs exclusively about killing into songs about women, partying, etc.

Nobody is listening to Jersey Club MUSIC, but the sound, mainly the drum pattern, has become a staple in NY music today. I’m not talking about Joey Badass and Dave East, but the music we actually listen to here by new artists
we're really still debating this?:comeon:

But to answer your question @Neuromancer I think once the industry decided to push the south, due to the fact that they were less of a risk, thats when nyc rap started to decline. Also restrictions on sampling didn't help either

But ny never really lost its sound though. There are plenty of artists that still make "boom bap" sampled based music. Its just not THE most popular on the mainstream waves right now.

Ofcourse ny drill beats are pretty big these days but thats a totally different lane and not traditional NY.

They never did.

90s they had boom bap (Wu tang/Nas) mainstream sample (Jiggy era) then Ruff Ryder Casio sound. Tribe (jazz samples)

2000s soul chopping cause of Ghostface supreme clientele then Jay made it mainstream with blueprint due to Just Blaze and Ye. And dipset had their spin on the sampling

2010s no drums thanks to Roc Marci then later those super hi hats with their drill sound

2020s they have the jersey club drill, no drums etc

I get it southern trap southern has been the mainstream sound for a long time but NY never really lost their sound and has kept producing stars throughout.

They never lost their sound they just stop having the most popular sound

Yall all wrong...between nyc radio turning straight corporate and playing or supporting any new artist (ebro)...the only two stations beefing with each other...on some kids shyt.

the shift changed when soulja boy and oj the juiceman popped...it cheapened the product when anyone can pop...
nyc rap was based on lyrics....once that didnt matter its a free for all...

why would a label invest on talent, a story and lyrics...when you can make anyone a star...
why would they invest in lyrical talent...when abc works and its cheaper....

then nyc just said fukk it chase the bag:yeshrug:
