Nyc is about the money

It always chased the money

And its filled with transplants claiming it

We are a long way removed from thr traditional hip hop culture that came from there. Theres still some artists who use it but most again, chase whats popular att.

Plus the labels are embedded there so the labels want a more open sound. Nyc radio dont push nyc artists aka ebro calling sean p minor leagues. Thats why there are barely any nyc based commercial rappers doing pure nyc stuff. Thats for the ug and you wont get play in ya own city, let alone other cities.

I have a traditional answer about NWA and then the South appealing more to Black folks outside of the tri-state, but the real answer is Clear Channel and the Telecom Act of 1996, and later on Youtube/SoundCloud/Blog Raps and the algorithm.

A$AP Rocky was the first big AND NEW artist out of NYC for quite some time - and he said he grew up on the South. HE GREW UP ON THE SOUTH, steady living in Harlem. He didn't say Dipset, Wu Tang, Rakim..he said UGK.

How the music is marketed, advertised, and distributed is the real reason why young east coasters listen to the South and Chicago, and then make Drill/Southern hip hop.

When you destroy the connection between youth and their elders, this is what you get.

I mean how many folks still bumping Stevie Wonder and Al Green and they're under 25?

NY Radio played a big role.

Then you had the keyboard sound that came in in the late 90's, and people scared to sample like before because of the prices being asked. Labels didn't want to pay for clearances anymore, so dudes tried to become Swizz and Rockwilder overnight to stay afloat. Tim and The Neptunes took over and that became a sound that people wanted to chase. We lost the sound for a few reasons. All of which could've been avoided.

So NYC went from being leaders, to being the washed follower. Everything went south after that. Both literally and figuratively.

Troy Ave had the ball but dropped it. French Montana still makes new York music in-between his trap and pop songs. Griselda is fairly successful for the type of music they make. Boom bap just needs a rapper that doesn't suck at hooks and song writing to make a comeback.
So in other words, that sound is dead, huh :pachaha:

Are you from NY? Do you live here? Nothing about NY drill has anything to do with Chicago drill sonically. Drill music has evolved from songs exclusively about killing into songs about women, partying, etc.

Nobody is listening to Jersey Club MUSIC, but the sound, mainly the drum pattern, has become a staple in NY music today. I’m not talking about Joey Badass and Dave East, but the music we actually listen to here by new artists
And that’s one of the worst styles in rap today. That NY/UK drill production is terrible and simple as hell. And throwing a lazy sample over it barely saves it.

By the late 1990s, the South was coming out with more varied/fresh/innovative production (Timbaland. Neptunes, Organized Noize, Mannie Fresh Lil John etc..) than NYC. NY started them doing them Casio beats and they weren't seeing the production coming from the South

Midwest lost it's sound too , they weren't known for making remedial raps until Chief Keef popped up
IMO, a lot of chicago drill music doesn't really sound that much different from the old 90's style sonically. Just updated for the current time.

I'm talking about the scene with twista, psychodrama, snypaz, triple darkness, some of crucial conflict etc.

Even the content is basically the same shyt, except drill artists tend to directly diss dead rivals and opposing gangs, and the cats from back then were more lyrically and technically gifted.

. . . what's the "regional sound of NY" that you mean ?!!. . . . it all depends what era you experienced your glory days of YOUTH . . .. because that was the soundtrack to your wins and losses and everything in-between as you navigated through Life living in the moment totally oblivious to the impending banality of adulthood - (if you even were one of the lucky(?) ones to make it that far) . . .. but regardless - its very simple as others have already pointed out . . . in no particular order - Gentrification... Social-Media . .. Clear Channel . .. Giuliani enforcing the Cabaret Act . . . . etc. . . . its the subtle New World Order that's been taking place for a couple decades . .. . forget about the "Regional Sound" . .. lets talk about "Regional Accents" slowly being smoothed over . ..

It's dead in the mainstream just like rock music, but millions of people still listen to Rock and go to shows, it's just not promoted by the labels. I think with ai and royalty free samples, that type of production is starting to make a comeback . Drill, rage and trap are definitely getting played on, and most of those rappers gotta crash out to get popping so they have short careers. Drake,Cole , Kendrick and Eminem are still the top selling rappers they're not new York rappers but they all still rap rap
