How could "True Detective" have had such a massive falloff?

FUKANAGA WAS A HUGE PART OF THE SUCCESS OF SEASON 1 :ohlawd:

HE WAS LIKE THE SHAWN RYAN TO KURT SUTTER...KEPT NIC IN LINE :myman:

NIC WENT FULL SUTTERY IN SEASON 2 AND IT SHOWS :scust:

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I also didn't like Nic throwing jabs at Fukunaga, as I've enjoyed a lot of his work and he's a very promising director. He also had to write this season too quickly. McConaughey and Harrellson are an unfukkwitable combination on screen.

Beasts of no nation was dope. While we had struggle writing for true detective season two in his absence. That said it was a 7/10 season so it wasn't THAT bad of a fall off, but yes there was a noticeable dip.

The writer got hit with plagiarism allegations at the height of season 1's popularity.

Most fans were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until season 2.

After season 2 it seems pretty obvious the allegations were accurate.

Fred.
And this.

None of those names are fukking with Harrelson and McConaughey on the screen together :dame:
Colin was actually good. Vince wasn't bad he just had struggle lines. Rachel could have been better if they actually went into her character more. And they should have either elaborated on Taylor's character or not had him in at all. His arch was pointless.

Colin and Rachel had decent chemistry and were compelling. If the show had focused on them and lost the soldier I think it could've been better.

But yeah, Matt and Woody had crazy chemistry :whew:
Damn Byrd gang minds think alike :wow:

A friend that works in Hollywood said Vince was freestyling all those lines....:dead: I don't know if thats true, or if he read that somewhere, or heard it around, but it's hilarious to think of Vince just coming on the set spewing that nonsense lol

I highly doubt he was freestyling the lines but if this is true they don't respect the audience.

I just read on tvline.com last week that HBO still hasn't been renewed "True Detective" for a 3rd season & the status of the show is in limbo.
HBO has long said they will make season 3 the minute nic wants to do it. This was before, during and after s2. Nic hasnt said wether he wants to do s3 or if hes going to take some time off. I expect they will take 3-4 years off then come back with another season.

I liked season 2 so :yeshrug:

The writer thought he was what made season 1 special. Reality is, season 1 was special in spite of him. It was the acting and directing that did it. He thought he was Bobby Brown leaving New Edition but he was more of a Nicole Scherzinger leaving the p*ssy Cat Dolls.
This is just nonsense.

You cant have a great show in spite of the guy who wrote the entire show.

That doesnt even make sense.

The acting, writing and directing was all top notch in s1. The writing absolutely is part of what made it special.

They changed directors, like was said above. Having one good director do all the episodes makes a big difference.
I was hugely dissapointed they didnt go with 1 director again.

Even though I liked s2,it wasnt as good as s1 and nics ego definitely played a part in that. He didnt want to share his baby with someone else and wanted all the credit, and the product suffered for it.

But all the revisionism about how cary should get 100% of the credit for s1 and nic should get none is just ridiculous.

Pizzaloto's ego got in the way. S1 was such a success, he thought he could do the exact same thing with S2 and it couldn't be repeated. The actors didn't return and Nic had a falling out with the director that made his #StayWoke dialogue work. He lost Emmitt, Irvin and Aikman.

Like i said,s3 will come if nic wants to do it. Hbo has spoken on this several times. They are waiting on him,its not waiting to be renewed.

Heres an article from today

HBO's hit crime drama anthology "True Detective" is up for its third season. While the first installment of the series received praises and various nominations, the second outing, although given favorable reviews, fell short of filling the great success set by its predecessor.

Despite this, the cable network is still putting its full trust in the show's creator Nic Pizollato, even inking a contract that will last until 2018, Variety reported. In addition, Pizollato is also up for other projects lined. So what will happen with "True Detective" now that Pizollato's attention will be divided?

According to a separate report by Indiewire, HBO is just waiting for the executive producer's decision regarding the direction of the show if it pursues another run. Although the contract includes an open possibility for the cop-themed TV show to return in a new outing, the cable company is also pushing Pizollato to focus more on his new projects.

The difference in "True Detective's" first and second season is mainly behind the camera. On the Matthew McConaughey-Woody Harrelson version, Pizollato worked closely with producer Cary Fukunaga, who he also collaborated with in the overall story. On the other hand, the novelist and producer worked alone in honing the Colin Farrell-Rachel McAdams edition. Now, he is given the full power on whether he would like to get some new writers and even a showrunner for the third season, or if he would just want to work alone again.

Despite the success amassed by its first season, there werereports that Pizollato just didn't get along well with Fukunaga causing tension on set.

Stars just aligned for S1 one. Everything just came together nicely for the most part. Watched the first epi or 2 of S2. Put it on the backlog to watch at some point in the future.
