How could Jay Z be the GOAT when he's never made a good song that wasn't about Jay Z?

Idk most people I talk to argue Aquemini is better, the peak of their run musically and conceptually etc.

Let's be serious they're both pretty equal it comes down to preference. I prefer ATLiens. Soul Food is in that convo too for sure and even Southernplaya ain't far behind.
I'm 50/50 on ATLiens vs Aquemeni. Both are equally good, although ATLiens holds a place with me because that was the "flip" album. But as a collective, when Stankonia is considered your "worst" album, you are doing something right. (no, I don't count Speakerboxxx/Love Below as an Outkast album)

I see the Jay stans in full effect. I appreciate the negs. Lets me know you're mad and I'm on point. Lemme break it down for most of y'all:

I actually grew up listening to Jay-Z. I witnessed Jay-Z drop classic records, and I was well into high school when Jay-Z started being one of the biggest hip hop stars (Vol 2). I'm a fan of his great music. I was the guy telling y'all that Vol 2 >> 400 Degreez which had people catching feelings. I think Jay-Z is the most consistent rapper of all time.

But Jay-Z has never had a classic album. He's not that guy. I'm sorry if that hurts your feelings. Maybe you wish you were Jay so you'd be fukking Beyonce and you're thinking: 'if I stan Jay, I can be a boss just like him' :mjlol: Life doesn't quite work like that.
That's one thing I've always said about Jay. While a lot of artist are up and down, he has been one of the most consistent, if not the most consistent in the game. His best was not better than others, but while some great artist put out trash albums, Jay kept hits coming. People call Reasonable Doubt Jay's best album when it could be argued that it wasn't even in the Top 3 in 1996. That's no shot at Jay but 95-96 produced some of the most quality music in hip hop history. :yeshrug:

For the record, Liquid Swords isn't held in the same regard as those albums. I dare anyone to tell me that isn't a GOAT contender.
Liquid Swords is certified in my book. OB4CL is considered a hands down classic, but truth is, it's debatable if that or Liquid Swords was the best album to come out the camp...

exactly. that's why these posters make me laugh. Jay-Z doesn't make albums. He makes hits. And I respect it. He realized early he could never be Nas, but he could be Big.

Liquid Swords > Only Built imo

The golden 3: Supreme, Liquid, Cuban Linx. all in my top 10. two in my top 5

Exactly. Jay found his lane and rode it well and that's one thing he can't be knocked for. He wasn't trying to make classic albums; he was trying to get paid and said such in "Moment of Clarity." IMO, Jay has never made a classic album IMO but he has made great albums. For me to consider an album a classic, it has to have "playthrough." If I listen to an album and think, "he/she should have left this song off the album," I can't call it a classic. I remember somebody arguing with me that College Dropout (which is one of my favorite albums) was a classic. I then asked them to rap "Breathe In, Breathe Out," and that was the end of that debate..lol

show me one jay album with out a reach for radio play, or a song that shouldn't be there.

I'll wait...
:dahell:
Since when does "Radio play means it can't be classic" ?
What do you think Purple Rain and Thriller were doing ?
They were running the radio ragged that's what.

Jay-Z is one of the goats.
We need to stop these played out threads about Jay-Z,Nas, Dipset etc.
It's like this forum is perpetually stuck in 2000-fukking-7

exactly. I thought this was what we called classics. Coming from The Source era and all. 5 mic albums must have playthrough. Which would mean that very few albums would qualify, but that's the point, isn't it? If we start assigning classics to everything that's decent-great it defeats the purpose of calling something classic.

@mobbinfms thoughts?

Why do y'all keep reaching for these non-hip hop examples?

Regarding Thriller, that was the entire point of it.

My personal opinion. Off the Wall was better than Thriller as an album but you can't deny Thriller's singles. Thriller had like 9 tracks and released 6 titanic singles, but we always tend to ignore that "Wanna Be Starting Something" was the first song on that album and a single. :trash:

obvious pandering in hip hop are automatic point losers no matter how good the joint is. don't compare hip hop to pop. nobody ever said jay wasn't a goat, just that he doesn't have a true classic album(lots of classic individual joints). rd was dope, but jay came in the game a sell out.

i never understood all the hate that jay gets, if you dont like an artist dont listen to him you dont have to make a thread about y you hate them, that just seems kinda stanish to me.

it's not like saying Kobe aint shyt because Kobe is basketball, and this is hip hop. Let's keep the analogies HIP HOP.

as for an album being as good as Illmatic/OB4CL, it's gotta be on that tier or at least really close.

Jay-Z's albums aren't classic like that. Doggystyle is a better album than any Jay-Z album, so it's not just Illmatic/OB4CL. Liquid Swords is also a better album than any Jay-Z album.
who is determining these classic. Cause outside of the east coast u will rarely ever heard ob4cl or liquid sword as classic/genre defining. Illmatic and doggy style and other album transcended they region

I would argue more people around the country enjoy rd over both those albums, from production to features.

influence and thoroughness. something all jay albums lack.
Blueprint and black album had more influence and thoroughness then most albums in hip hop history

I used to feel that way....
...but just go back and listen to his shyt.

I didnt really start fukking w/ Jay till like last year.
I went back and listened to his discography...
...RD, Vol 2, and Black Album are 3 classics (imo) off the top of my head.

Hip Hop is.......
No it isn't. Teenage Love was about Slick Rick? Keep Ya Head Up was about 2Pac? Bonita Applebum was about Q-Tip? Mainstream was about Outkast and Goodie Mob? Burn Hollywood Burn was about Chuck, Ice Cube, and Big Daddy Kane? Jimmy was about KRS-One? One Love was about Nas? I could go on and on.
