How could Jay Z be the GOAT when he's never made a good song that wasn't about Jay Z?

OP is right.

Jay-Z's whole appeal is that he's the most self-aware rapper ever, to the point of fulfilling self-prophecy. Why do you think people caught such a chill off "U Don't Know?" That song is the essence of Jay-Z. And for the most part, he's made that song 100 times before and after U Don't Know.

OP is talking about Jay-Z's worldview. It's not expansive like your best hip hop artists. Jay-Z's worldview is Jay-Z. Lettuce be reality. That doesn't make Jay-Z wack, and he's still one of the greatest to ever do it, but GOAT? How can you be GOAT when the greatest rappers have expansive worldviews? Frankly, we crown rappers GOAT because they're the most observant about shyt we hadn't thought about/needed to know.

Ghost is not a good example. Look at his verse on "I Cant Go To Sleep" and how that shyt starts.

Technique is ill son, watch how I spill one
Peace to Biggie, 2Pac, Big L and Big Pun
Havoc on the streets of Staten, snitches
House nikkas, children watch as they produce the same pattern
Somebody raped our women, murdered our babies
Hit us with the cracks and guns in the early 80's
For those that murdered me shall stand before God
To fall at the hands of fate, then out comes the rod

Bring it back, bring it back, bring it back
What the fukk is going on, I can't go to sleep
Feds jumping out their jeeps, I can't go to sleep
Babies with flies on they cheeks, it's hard to go to sleep
Ish bowled two 6's twice, I couldn't go to sleep
Aiyyo we deep in the stairs, we carry big guns
Whippy got hit up with the big shyt, bong bong

Yes, Ghost is speaking in first person as an observant first-person, but the reason this hits so hard is that Ghost is speaking on larger issues/things than just himself.

As I've said to many people before, you specifically I believe, my GOAT is determined by body of work, which is a perfectly reasonable barometer to measure greatness. Jay has 3 classics, not many other people do. I could give a fukk about subject matter. Not everyone brings the same stuff to the table in terms of song writing. Redman is in my top 5, he's a weed dude more or less lol. But he does it in so many different ways it is interesting, same with Jay.

I mean I see what you're saying about the worldview but I feel it is reaching a little bit because while he incorporates himself into it, it really is applicable to all kinda thing. It's an all inclusive type of thing he's going for. Granted, not as fully detached as Pac rapping about Brenda's Got a Baby for example but still. D'Evils...I still don't see how that doesn't count for something that is other than him. There's a larger theme at hand, and he's far from the centre of the story, unlike Imaginary Player, which I can concede is mainly about him.

:wtf: 3 classics? I'd argue that Jay-Z has 0 classics.

However, Jay-Z has more decent albums than anyone in rap history. And by "decent" albums, I mean albums that contain at least 3 or 4 superb tracks.

by who?

All those albums have phenomenal songs, but they also have filler. They also all contain radio-attempt songs - some great, some terrible. Classics in the true sense of the word don't have filler and don't dumb their music down for radio

@SirBiatch man they have vast critical acclaim you can't ignore that.

Also by that logic, Supreme Clientele has Cherchez LaGhost. A lot of filler skits, in fact one of the worst when it comes to that shyt.

Cherchez LaGhost is brilliant. That was not a radio song. I remember clearly when Cherchez LaGhost came out. I thought it was the wackest shyt ever because it was so weird. And I was used to hearing radio friendly hip hop.

Breh, we're talking filler songs. fukk a skit. I could easily do without the Woodrow skit. I never liked it. The other skit tho (Who Would You fukk) is the greatest skit I've ever heard in rap. It's hilarious, it's musical... it's great shyt.

All that is besides the point tho :what: Let's not deflect to Supreme Clientele here. Let's focus on Jay-Z. This is about Jay-Z.

I know those albums you mentioned have critical acclaim. Rightfully so. They're great albums. But classic? That's a different category. Illmatic and Cuban Linx aren't just great albums - they're classics. It's a different tier.

:laff: at Jay having no classics....

@SirBiatch you're a terrible poster....terrible..

Mention me on some childish shyt but have nothing to add... on some childish shyt. :umad:

Ok on topic.

A classic has to have both the quality and the influence.

By you calling them great albums, I'm assuming you're referring to quality. So that's one thing.

Reasonable Doubt was influential because it took the mafioso sub-genre and approached it from a different angle, and as it turned out, most albums thereafter followed the RD style of subject matter more so than the Cuban Linx style, though Cuban Linx was definitely more influential and better in the grand scheme of things.

The Blueprint was influential for its sound alone, although Supreme Clientele never gets the credit it deserves for ironically being the blueprint album for The Blueprint. Plus it has a lot of classic tracks. Not as cohesive as Reasonable Doubt, but full of powerhouse tracks, cultural references used to this day etc.

The Black Album is literally an abundance of classic tracks. The impact of 99 Problems and Dirt Off Your Shoulder alone is enough to merit its classic status, but in reality every song is so dope as well. That album was a culmination of everything Jay-Z had put into previous albums, all rolled into one album.

And don't give me Meet the Parents. Contrived, forced, uninspired, tried way too hard...the message subtlety of an Oliver Stone film.

Don't even mention Minority Report with that gay ass John McCain whisper flow.
