I live by Emancipation park and grew up in. Houston Juneteenth isn't a big deal down here. The Shape center give Kwanzaa more clout than Juneteenth.
That might be your experience, and I'd agree if we were talking a decade ago. But, juneteeth has seen a spike in interest in recent years.
Numbers speak for themselves.
Kamryn Jones spent her Saturday afternoon enjoying the splash pads with dozens of other children at Emancipation Park.
The 5-year-old and her family were among more than 5,000 Houston area residents who came to the Third Ward park to celebrate the 154th anniversary of Juneteenth, an annual event commemorating the end of slavery in Texas.
Juneteenth celebration draws thousands to historic Houston park
And that pic is from early in the day.
I wont even address kwanzaa having more clout than juneteeth in the tre. lol Keep cappin tho.
Juneteeth festival is only growing larger every year due increased ethno-cultural awareness among AADOS people, especially in Houston since the tradition started around these parts(whether G-town or H-town is still Houston metro). Emancipation park was originally founded specifically for the purpose of celebrating Juneteeth. lol Afrocentric events like Kwanzaa are steadily losing interest. Most young AADOS people aren't interested in Afrocentrism. Many outright reject it.
