I appreciate this thread for showing off public buses, the way people show off luxury cars. All they need in Houston are elbow spinners on the buses, for the new routes :russ:

I'm riding the eastside routes all week (Aug. 16th-22nd) hopefully... and going to try to update my flickr with pics of the new mode buses......

question..... Have you ever used a smart phone in place of a dslr camera? My d5000 is nearly 5 years old... and my mom's samsung note 3 records in 4k.....

We byke! :blessed:

The old 2800s might not make it past this week though. :mjcry: My Metro connect told me with the new network Metro will actually need LESS peak buses (100 less) so the oldest will be going to that big bus barn in the sky. :mjcry:

Or underneath the Earth. :demonic:

@Always-Right Liggins

I found this on an ABC13 article about the change:
METRO changes all bus routes on August 16

GFBrown2 days ago

In my opinion, the true nature of these changes to the existing bus system is not to make the bus system better, but actually to decrease the bus system, thus freeing up money that will be used to increase the funds spent on light rail. An additional purpose of these reroutes is to FORCE even more transit riders to use the light rail lines, thus increasing the very dismal ridership figures for those light rail lines.

Metro's light rail has an absolutely abysmal ridership. The Metro service area has over 5,700,000 residents, yet ridership on it's light rail, except for rare events, has never moved beyond 50,000 daily boardings. Do the math (50,000/5,700,000) and you get 0.88%. That's less than 1% of all possible Metro light rail riders.
Thus the purpose of these bus route changes : To force more transit users onto the train in order to increase the ridership figures, and thus increase the justification for more light rail.

The true reason for Metro light rail is actually Real Estate Value Enhancement. The properties surrounding the light rail stations become very valuable because of the limited access nature of those stops.

This aspect of Metro's rail plans is aptly illustrated by an op/ed article written by David Crossley, President of Houston Tomorrow (a non-profit, developer-funded, advocacy group pushing for greater urban density) published in the Houston Chronicle on April 15, 2012 :
" We have done a lot of research on the increase in property values....around light rail stations.There's no other way that comes even remotely close to walkable urbanism...and increasing property values. "

Light rail is extremely expensive, about $150 million per mile, and that money must be found somewhere, even if it means destroying the bus routes necessary to Houston's transit users.

After all, bus riders don't make political contributions, but wealthy developers do.
