Is the reason Ethiopia is having all these problems is because they didn't defeat the previous administration/group? Last I heard they were close to doing so then for whatever reason, didnt.

Abiy is a trash leader that’s hellbent on money and power and making himself out to be the leader that redeems Ethiopia. It’s one thing to want to restore the country, quite another to do it in the reckless fashion he’s done it.

I agree with @GnauzBookOfRhymes in that he’s doing things that the US probably is in support of behind the scenes. If he provokes a war with Eritrea then I’ll assume they’ve sanctioned him as the over thrower of Isaias just like they did with Meles and the ICU back in the 00s.

One thing to never forget is that leaders are oftentimes ignorant, but rarely stupid.

This kind of move from Abiy is similar (in some not all ways) to Putin and Ukraine.

Most Russians 2 years ago wouldn't have chosen "invade Ukraine" as option A for what the country should be focused on.

But at the same time, deep down inside the Russian psyche, even anti Putinists probably believe Ukraine naturally falls under traditional Russian sphere of influence.

Once Putin started the war, the people who don't like him hate him even more. But at the same time, they will "fall in line" when confronted with the question of whether they hope he wins or loses.

It is deviously intelligent for Abiy to leverage the issue of Ethiopian access to the sea, which for many people has historically been seen as the biggest catastrophe of modern history, in this way.

It was like Meles and the dam. Even people who hated his guts had to support the idea of the dam etc.

Same basic idea here but it might be that he's burned so many bridges that even something this important may not be enough for his detractors to he distracted. But I think that's the general strategy here.

I’m hearing that UAE is the mastermind behind this move with the support of Israel. I don’t know how accurate the latter is but I’m 100% certain the former is funding it.

UAE has hands in practically all the major conflicts in Africa to safeguard their interest.

I believe they’re trying to counter the Houthis threat in the Red Sea.

I just don’t see how this will work out in the end, just like 2006, it will just destroy all the progress made and send the region back 20 years.

Facts, but in a way I understand the crazy logic because port access for Ethiopians is almost akin to the dam issue for Egyptians. It’s the one thing that a majority can agree on and his obsession with creating this grandiose legacy is what’s driving the insane decision making. That and saving his dwindling support at home.

Despite IGAD, African Union, Arab Union, US, Europe and damm near every country and governing body reaffirming their commitment to recognizing and respecting Somalias sovereignty and territorial integrity. Mad man Abiy is doubling down on his quest to make the illegal MOU agreement a reality. This morning he sent an unauthorized plane transporting official to Hargiesa. It was quickly denied entry to Somalias airspace and it turned around back to Addis.

"So far many countries condemned Ethiopia's act of aggression. The harshest words came from the US. The National Secuiry advisor to Biden, Mr. John Kirby, said Abiy's action is a threat to US national interest. The AU also said it stands with Somalia and affirms its territorial integrity. Turkey's parlaiment passed a resolution to defend Somalia's watters in the Sea. Egypt is ready to help Somalia. The Arab League also vowed to stand by Somalia. Uncharacteristic of its interventionist policy, the United Arab Emerites (UAE) abandoned Abiy in his crazy journey to annex Somalia's waters."

I don't know how accurate this is but I heard FANO is gaining power in the Amhara region. Maybe this explains Abiys strange moves lately in hopes of providing a distraction.

Shirwan did a great job on this video other than using some stock footage incorrectly. For the most part this is what’s going on. Internal security hasn’t been this bad since Mengistu times, gentrification is exploding in Addis and displacing whole communities, cost of living is crazy, Abiy wanted the country to look like an American vassal and it does.

Serious question for anyone who has any knowledge: Why was the international community OK with South Sudan becoming a separate country yet seemingly no country on Earth is OK with Somaliland making their own shyt?

Serious question for anyone who has any knowledge: Why was the international community OK with South Sudan becoming a separate country yet seemingly no country on Earth is OK with Somaliland making their own shyt?
Because the process for South Sudan becoming independent and recognized came from the peace settlement after the 2nd Sudanese Civil War that went from 1982-2005. The south got autonomy back and both the south and the central government in Khartoum agreed on the parameters of a referendum. Then they held it, the independence side won and South Sudan got recognized by Khartoum and the wider international community.

Somaliland has not wanted to do anything with Mogadishu since 1991. But there are regions in Somaliland most notably on the western edge near Djibouti and the eastern side where the clans there want to remain part of Somalia. Even in the larger cities there is a lot of people that want to still be part of one Somalia. But the pro secession folks are gung ho about seeking international recognition. But you need the government in Mogadishu to recognize you before anyone else will.

And it simply won’t ever happen.
