Isn't Ethiopia having access to the ocean a good thing for them?

It is, but the way he’s going about it is at minimum a highly controversial route because he’s now not only on bad terms with Eritrea but now Somalia as well. Goes back to what I said about Abiy being desperate for Western backing. They’ve been tryna get SL recognized for a bit and Ethiopia doing that is big progress in that effort.

Ethiopia loses a lot of money dealing with Djibouti exclusively but a better leader could’ve gotten agreements with Eritrea and Somalia for port access without creating a new regional flashpoint. Shows that he’s not concerned with good leadership/governance at all. I’m sure he’s just waiting for the blessing from Biden to invade Eritrea outright in the name of regime change. We shoulda known the peace was a farce because there was no real discussions/reconciliation for all the lives lost over all those decades.

Hopefully fano takes him out.

Only reason I ain’t dap this is because I really just want ALL Ethiopians to reject this shyt. The biggest problem has been one group taking the lead and then taking the lions share of influence. The idea of nation building is foreign as fukk in this space it’s just about groups attempting to exercise control over the others.

Had the revolution been of the Nyere or Sankara type then things might’ve been better but that didn’t happen so it’s like the mutilated mix of old monarchy politics and crude attempts at western style governance. Just as with much of Africa, centuries of tradition and knowledge was thrown away completely instead of being improved and built upon.

Sisi with a firm statement in support of Somalia. IGAD a little more tepid. IGAD repeating 2006 compromised tone.

I just having a feeling this agreement never sees the light of day. More likely there is another fight over Assab if the Russians don't get it first.

Yeah, I’m thinking the same. There was a much more politically sound way to get access to the sea than this. This was a thirsty ass move and once again Ethiopia has to be embarrassed by her trash leadership.

Unless he wants to war with Somalia and take it all. Then it makes total sense. And even then, he doesn’t have the domestic support for that kinda military campaign. I’m starting to think this dikkhead work for El-Sisi.

SL President oversold the deal to his people - pretty clear its not a firm commitment from Ethiopia.

MOUs arent legally binding documents (unlike treaties) and the wording in the MOU says "... it includes provisions for the Ethiopian Government to make an in depth assessment towards taking a position regarding the efforts of Somaliland to gain recognition". This is very clearly weak that doesnt suggest any real diplomatic move is imminent. As its an election year in Somaliland, the President has an incentive to oversell the agreement, and pretend hes made significant progress towards recognition. Abiy on the other hand also has an incentive to sell a big geopolitical achievement to Ethiopian public. Whether any of this sees the light of day, Im skeptical.
