They usually put out quality games that are well optimized. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say they’re the most talented

This is the part I disagree with. Japanese developers have been struggling with optimization this gen.

Fromsoft with elden ring, Capcom this year with Dragon’s Dogma 2 and probably MHW next year, SE with Rebirth, Atlus with Metaphor, etc. They aren’t the only ones but it’s been very noticeable this year especially

I’ll give you DD2 and MHW(from what we’ve seen so far), can’t speak on some of the others

But you think Elden Ring wasn’t optimized? :wtf:

Naw elden ring had really bad frame pacing, stuttering, and the ray tracing mode is still broken. You still can’t get a solid 60fps on current gen consoles unless you run the ps4 version on ps5

You could make the argument that they have the highest concentration of game dev talent for a single country. There are western devs that are just as good but they’re all spread out across Europe and North America

10 years ago western devs were calling Japanese devs washed in their faces.

Now they/them she/he’s are looking funny in the light.:wow:

Euro devs are doing decently tho. :ehh:

I'd say historically yes. But if we're talking about big studios.

The west had a good run in the mid-2000's to 2010's when the shooter and sandboxes were the wave. But then good ole western style capitalism reared it's ugly head and the innovation ground to a halt.

Japan, on the other hand, seems to give devs more latitude to make the kind of game they want to make. Think about the risks a company like Capcom took on games like RE4, Monster Hunter and Okami. But these games are lauded because they are games that break molds or make new ones. Elden Ring is just a decade of FromSoft taking every Souls game and building on it with more mechanics and ideas. But Miyazaki was given that latitude. The west doesn't do that.

However, I think the US/Europe are FAR superior at making great indie games. Mostly because those smaller studios aren't beholden to goofy ass shareholders.

It might be more of an issue for console then. It ran damn near flawlessly on PC for me and I don’t have the beefiest system

In general though from what I’ve seen optimization since the PS4 era has been rough across the board so I wouldn’t dock Japanese devs points on that

I strongly agree with this, I'm not even sure why Japan is so lackluster at Indie titles.

The US/EU/China/Korea absolutely kill it.

If we do an all time list wars then yeah i think Japan would come out on top.

But today, there’s too much competition, especially considering the international nature of most AAA development.
