Honest Conversation: Is Japan the best at making games?

What’s the hype about

It different for different people, it’s a 40 year old franchise that has gone through multiple iterations, spinoffs, remakes, etc. each game has a totally different story and for the last 20 years have had completely different gameplay.

Most people don’t love every final fantasy game, there’s probably a handful each fan connects to. They share not much more than a name and some iconography

Any game series that has been around for that long is going to have hardcore fans

It goes so, so much deeper than a starting 5, western game developers have put out so much more quality content and moved the ball so far forward in several key genres (multiplayer titles like shooters, sports games, o pen-world RPGs). Like I said earlier, when you take Nintendo (and to a lesser extent, Square Enix) out of the equation, the Japanese market becomes so much thinner compared to the western market.

If, gun to my head, I have to give you my starting 5 examples of the western market leaving the Japanese market behind:

Fallout
Grand Theft Auto
Call of Duty (some will hate that pick, but it's revolutionized the industry)
The Last of Us
God of War

But I could go on and on with examples of series that have brought better stories, graphics, and gameplay than what modern Japanese developers are usually offering.


Duck clearly means right now, modern gaming (if we're talking across the entire history of the industry, yes, Japan wins).

There’s 16 mainline games about about 50 spinoffs, its all different

I get that you're used to dealing with Xbox stans spitting dishonest questions but I legit have trouble remembering where all these studios are

If I didn't know Capcom for its fighting games, I wouldn't know Resident Evil isn't a west game.

I'm still voting on Japan winning it because Nintendo alone has some industry-defining franchises, but yeah, thinking about it, the west really locked down the current multiplayer games. Sports games and shooters are definitely a big plus for the west.
