as @Coco Loco put it "control"
You can expect the work to still get done, But you can't micro manage people via text and email.

Thats pretty much it, Problem is while this is mostly a bad thing that employers should relinquish control of. There are some cases were it is needed.
Some new hire that hardly knows what they are doing can't just be left to their own devices. Even if they are working diligently the whole time, they might be fukking shyt up. People are more likely to ask questions if they can just shout across the room at you, or tap you on shoulder, than if they have make a phone call or send an email.

I know this personally because i work remote and in the office. I get a lot more questions when i am in the office than when i am away.

I'm admittedly a lot less productive when I work from home.

That's me in the office. At home I have no distractions, water cooler conversations, breakfast/lunch outings, and it's cold as hell in there so we suffer. Working from home/hybid was a lifesaver for my mental health

I get more done because I have no excuses

It's not a detriment. Infact it empowers the worker and that's the issue.

This! They know how much having flexibility improved people's mental state. They want people to be miserable like them

The good thing about it is when it snows/the federal government is closed, no one will be working. That doesn't apply to telework, unless it's a holiday, day of mourning etc people are still working who have the ability to telework

It isn't. Employers save beaucoup money on overhead if staff work from home. Employees save beaucoup money by not commuting and spending on lunch, gas, etc.

Only losers are commercial developers and landlords. But they'll be alright.
Companies get tax breaks for workers being onsite.

Oh I feel you. I love WFH. shyt it's 20 degrees today, I'm not going anywhere. I do appreciate the freedom of being able to come into the office when I really need to get shyt done. And I get free lunch.

Facts, where I work we switched to hybrid after covid calmed down. On days we are in the office if something comes up like a family situation, if you are sick, or maybe you are expecting a delivery we can still work from home. Just does sorts of things make life so much easier. Not to mention you save a lot of money.

Let's be clear cause there is a misunderstanding of telework and remote. Telework is both working from home and the office. Remote work is 100% at home or anywhere.

I did both and I can tell you my employer is losing hours from me going back to the office. At home, I would roll from the bed to my laptop. If I think about something around 9pm, I would go on my laptop and knock it out. Now, at least three hours a day are being lost from getting ready and commuting to work. Also, my laptop remains in the office so there's no more after hours work I wasn't getting paid for. After covid, it was reported productivity gone up with people working from home and everyone knows that.

This all falls under two things:
1. Businesses want foot traffic back so they can make money i.e. restaurants.
2. This falls within a right-wing ideology of smaller government. They want employes to quit while not refilling those positions. This is the easier route cause firing people would be too much of a legal process.

But feds were onsite a few times a week. The notion that majority of feds were remote is a lie. Yes some agencies never lifted their max telework allowance after covid, but most did and put people on 40%-50% status. Unless people have reasonable accommodations, most were hybrid before and after covid

The "get back to work" "go back to the office" talk is hilarious because that applies to like 10% of feds
