probably something the director thought would give the character depth. He was clearly meant to be a major character but they wanted him to be more than just a "Robin Hood Stick up Artist"
plus its controversial @ that time to have a man making out on TV with another man

Are you serious? Is this the first HBO show you've watched? It has little to do with the director... and more to do with the writers/creators and folks at HBO.

HBO is like the MTV of premium channels as far as pushing liberal agendas... You can't have an HBO show without having a gay character or a strong feminist female type character in the show.
