It's a Caribbean/West Indian thing, rooted in respect.
You say "Hello" and the time of day, 'cause chances are an elder is gonna be on the other end and the whole 'formal greeting' thing was a staple of manners and culture back in the day.
Like you couldn't just call a chick's house and be like "Yo, put Keisha on the phone." :aicmon:
You'd be admonished and depending on how serious your folks were, probably get slapped for the shyts too, but that was back in the 90's when cellphones weren't a readily available commodity.
