my dude peep game, I'm guessing you want to be an accountant right? First accounting firms don't care where you went to school as long as its accredited, so I wouldn't stress over a gmat. you're only going to grad school to satisfying the 150 right? Most MSA or MST programs care about your gpa more than gmat score(you still should be in the 500-600 range though).

Now, why waste your money and time on a CMA, I have meet some very successful people in the accounting world but have never met anyone with a cma. now the cpa is key, I did Becker's fast pass in the summer right after graduation before my start date, its grueling but worth it. trying to prepare and take the tests while still in school is tough.

I work in tax for a big four firm, made senior in one year I'm eating. oh yeah there's a 5k bonus for passing the cpa too.

good luck with what your doing and keep your gpa high.
Appreciate the advice fam. My uncle is a CMA but he came from UT Austin and doing pretty well for himself. It's starting to hit me it's because the school he went to now:ohhh:

I thought if I get both the CMA and CPA certs, it would get me a higher chance of landing a big 4 gig (I'm coming from a state university). I'm not sure if I get a CPA alone will put on the same playing field with folks from big name schools.

Oh and tax accountants eating good as auditing? :mjpls::ehh: I'm still debating which one to concentrate on

edit: Sorry to steal your thread 50centstan:lolbron:

You dont need a CMA its a waste of time. All your time and effort should be toward a CPA.

Do Tax Accountant if you like working by yourself and not much travel.

Do Audit if you like working in a group, like traveling and like to have option outside of Public accounting.

Big 4 should be your goal.

I studied for this test for 3 months and even tho I was pulling 700's on the practice test, I only got a 600 on the real test. I didn't even finish the math section. Whatever you do, DO NOT LEAVE ANY QUESTIONS BLANK!!! :damn:

I got a 6.0 on my essays tho. They added a new section, called Integrated Reasoning. I'm contemplating taking the GMAT again but I'm not about that study life. Got damn that shyt was the pits. (working 8-10 hrs, coming home and studying 3 hours)

Cot damn 700 to 600? What study books were you using? Or was it because you didn't finish the Math section?

The practice tests are dynamic and no guarantee that you'll score the same on the real one. They do penalize you HEAVY for leaving questions blank.

I spent a lot of time studying concepts, I should have spent more time working on my PACE.

The GMAT isn't really about getting the answer, its sometimes about picking the best guess and moving on to the next question.

if your coming straight out of school big 4 firms and most accounting only care if you meet the cpa requirements not, they're plenty of first yrs that haven't passed the test. its just at Pwc you can't make senior w/o it and at the other 3 you can't make manager. I went to a state school too, it really doesn't matter as long as they recruit at your school, if they don't apply online and hit up the recruiters on linkedin, most won't respond but a few will.

keep your gpa above 3, 3.2 is better, join your school's accounting club, and prep for the interview. learn about the firm's culture, and show interest in the job and ask QUESTIONS during the interview. try to make it flow so it isn't a Q and A session. the interviews aren't technical at all its all about do they like you. Oh apply for their internships, that's were they hire the most people.

now tax vs audit, tax makes more money its about 2k-5k difference in first yr salaries. now it really depends on what specific group you join and what office but general audit works more hours. audit travels and tax doesn't, but there is optional deployment which is usually 3 months and to India... there are more exit strategies for audit. now there is also fas, internal audit, and bunch of other services these firms offer. so you don't have to limit yourself to tax or audit.

it depends I work 60-65hr weeks for 3 months out the yr and 40hr the rest of the yr. now my girl who's in audit works 90hr weeks for 3months and 50hr the rest of the yr. its all about what city your in, what service line and what group. it really comes down to the ppd are and your managers though.

now I have friend who works at mcgladrey and she only works 50-55hrs during busy season, but there's a difference in pay. your gonna work at the big 4 but the money isn't bad and it means a lot to your resume. also the higher you move up the less hrs you work.

Are schools still doing the affirmative action thing? thought they stopped

the urm boost can be huge. if you're a good test taker, take advantage of that while you can.

im mainly going off my neighbor who works for deloitte

they made him a manager like 6 months ago so hes straight now

but he worked as an accountant for 4-5 years and he never made it out of the 50s. thats good money in houston but he worked a LOT. there were stretches where hed work from 8 am-10 pm. i dont think he was ever working 40 hour weeks, it was usually 45-50 during light times, 60-70 when it was hectic. thats a lot of work for the money.

he said its an investment. they get over on you for the first 5 years, but they hook you up as a manager. if you ever make partner :wow:
