they both have negs/poss', but catching it in a postion where you're able to defintively put two hands on the ball is ALWAYS the lesser of two evils.

Catching that ball with Tate on his back and arm was leaving it up to chance, as a DB he HAD to know the rules regarding a simultaneous catch and that it always goes to the offense. That isnt taking a chance on that play?
