Sounds good to me but doesn't sound like something a total beginner is about to get a piece of.

Don't matter where in America you are, Gasoline Trucking companies are always hiring. Alot will hire if you have a Truck Driving school certificate

Call 5-6 companies in your area, be straight with them about your experience. Get a Hazmat, TWIC Card, and Tanker, and you are set

So I was talking with an older cat today about truck driving and he was telling me paying to go to school is basically a waste of money.

Suggested should I just study for the permit, and after I get it pay some place with a qualified CDL driver to certify byou through the driving test portion and receive your license/certificate.

That was the gist of what he said. Anyone familiar with this course of action?

Instead of paying a couple grand and going to some classes for several weeks and getting qualified I can just do this instead?

It's been awhile since I'll talked to dude so I'm a little hazy on the details. But I think I'm explaining what he said more or less accurately.

That's basically exactly what I did. Got the permit, then went to this school that was charging $80 an hour for lessons. Did about 8-10 lessons prior to my test date, then passed the test.

Only thing is, I'd advise you to take lessons with a manual truck so you're better prepared. Wish I knew that going into the industry. Most trucks at jobs are manuals.

Yeah, I'm paying out my own pocket too so I don't got to commit to no kind of contracts. Trying to get to the LTL game. Either that or hauling fuel. Haven't got my hazmat yet but, I probably will but I'm not so sure about the being clean-shaven requirement...

Just realized I was replying to an old post :snoop:

But yeah, from what I hear from drivers tanker is harder to get into, but not that hard. You definitely need at least a year of verifiable experience and have a clean record.

Recently passed my permit test. Also got my tanker endorsement and doubles and triples. Knocked out my DOT physical as well. Hopefully I'll be starting class in November.
do they pay you as you go to school?

I highly suggest you do it before February of next year. After that it's going to be more difficult to obtain a CDL.
