Someone that's cheap?

This is huge simply because google also offers a "free" internet connection, you pay a 1 time installation fee then you got innanet with no monthly charge. You could piece together a package cheaper than anything these cable companies are offering.

If Google starts to offer ESPN on it's own, it's fukking game over.

Their "free" internet connection is capped at 5/1 though. I can't think of anything worth doing with that connection :to:

hbo should just be letting people subscribe on their own anyway.

and i fail to see how this is a win...120 for tv/net + 20 for HBO...sounds like the prices ppl already pay for these services. and piecing together the popular channels like espn, hbo, etc will always cost more. if an a la carte option that actually would make sense to the customer existed, it'd be available. customers claim they want this, but when pricing is shown nikkas be like :whoa:

We are probably a good 5-10 years away from reasonable a la carte prices. Once more people cut off the cable companies prices will drop to more compelling rates.

Actually it does. With Cable, if I want HBO, I have to get...

1. Basic cable
2. Expanded basic cable
3. Digital Cable

and then you add HBO on top of that.
Who would want just HBO for $20? No other channels? Just get Internet and partner with someone that has HBO and use their Go account.

A la carte will never happen. Content providers make it too prohibitive. You wanna show ESPN fine take all these bullshyt channels nobody wants and we can give you a reasonable rate. You don't want those bullshyt channels fine were gonna rape you for ESPN per subscriber. The cable company simply passes the rape on to you by forcing you to bundle channels you don't want to get channels you do aka expanded basic.

I agree with you in the here and now. I'm thinking more about the future. 10 years ago no cable wasn't a viable option at all. 10 years from now content providers will be dealing with a much more savvy consumer base. Some of which will flat out refuse to pay for cable as is. Cable companies are just now starting to deal with this and it is really a fringe part of the market.

Think about right now there is a whole crop of people (in hs and college) who are out here downloading all kind of stuff with no concept of paying. A good number of those people will flat out thumb their noses at paying for cable unless it is the way they want it.

When enough people like that get on the market I can't see the cable companies having much of a choice.

They still out here trying to 'bundle' land phone lines though so you may have a point. :dead:

In many cases the cable company is the one selling people Internet. When the time comes the business model will shift to whatever is profitable. Perhapse they'll be like cell phone companies and chop bandwidth up into much smaller packages than we have now and really nail people on the high monthly bandwidth packages. 2GBs of home data a month for $29.99 ect.

Like others have said, what about the other popular channels?

The premiums are the least important channels to have a subscription to in the download era.

You can't be out here naked without ESPN, TNT, CNN, FX, AMC, Comedy Central, etc. If you got kids Disney & Nick are a must. And what about DVR service. I more addicted to the DVR than any channel package itself.

Got our Google fiber installed today. very quick very simple. Honestly the speed isn't that noticeably different when when web surfing. I am currently downloading a 1.5 gig program and its downloading a lot faster than I anticipated. Seems like it will take 10 mins to download the file.
