:childplease: and 2800$ to browse the web on a mac book pro....whats the difference. You ahve web apps to do whatever you need.

Google drive= MS Office
Google music browser=itunes
Now what else do you do on the desktop....MS killed the desktop homie and went with metro UI aka chromeOS app launcher. Its the same shyt in a way. Yes windows can do more but at the same time have you tried windows 8 on a non lap top :dead:
I want to see you and @Swagnificent go back and forth about tech

WELL SAID
What is a "Real" OS?

Posted by Zecharixs on February 21, 2013 06:14 pm 17

I think we've been too consumed by our gut reaction that Chrome OS is not a real OS and $1300 is never justifiable. But what justifies a laptop's price, especially for the average consumer?

Hardware and software. Instead of raging at the price, it may be better to consider this thing's hardware quality and what needs does it fulfill for average people. Geeks are not the majority of consumers.

So first let's look at the hardware.

2560 x 1700 239ppi screen.

Touch screen

i5, Intel HD4000

4G RAM

Excellent keyboard and touchpad

Judging by the hardware alone, the device would be well worth $1300 considering the competition.

And what of the software? Remember, before kneejerk reactions we should consider what needs a person will have.

Web browsing in general, which Chrome OS does of course

Email, which can be accessed by outlook.com or gmail.com easily.

Videos - Youtube, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon all work.

Documents/office suite - There's Google Drive and native Office .doc(x) compatibility through quick office which comes pre-installed.

Chromebook Pixel to have integrated Quickoffice, able to open docs natively

Light photo editing, which Pixlr does and is comparable to a medium level Photoshop.

Gallery, which Chrome OS now has a beautiful version of.

Google intros Chrome photo app that features full-res G+ instant upload, intelligent photo selection

Simple multi-tasking- Chrome OS now has auto rearranging windows

Chrome OS update auto-arranges windows, allows multi-display desktops

And the touch screen, based on pictures from the Play Store, seems to be useful. The new photo-app is touch optimized. It just makes more sense that way. And how about Google Maps? I find it annoying to use the mouse to drag it over. Touch makes so much more sense.

https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=chromebook_pixel_wifi

Things that geeks expect but don't matter for average people include, using Blender, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Crysis, Eclipse, Java JDK, X Code, etc.

So think about what needs normal people will have and how this meets or doesn't meet those needs rather than thinking about the programs geeks won't have.

Maybe this will sell well, and maybe it won't. But it's the first time Chrome OS has had a premium flagship that creates reason to get excited. So let's not dismiss it out of hand.

The question is, why buy that hardware with an OS that can't do the things that others do in the same price range? If this was around 900-1000, I'd :aicmon: a little, but it wouldn't be that bad. But this is in the Macbook's range. It's not like you're getting a lot of bang for your buck like how Android used to be when compared to IOS.

that makes it even more :comeon:

fukk out of here if what you are hinting at is some sort of beta on a 12 inch notebook with $300 laptop specs outside of that screen.

Google always work in BETA. When has google ever come out with a finish product on day 1. When google + debuted few years ago the critics ate google up...few years later they are on half way to dethroning Facebook as the number 1 social network site

They debuted android when apple was eating blackberry lunch. 5 years later we see whats taking place....

ChromeOS officially launch last year bro. Give it time it will knock out MS :heh:

Overpriced. Cut it in half and it would sell like hotcakes just like the other ones.

Remember, Chrome is for small business and schools.

ChromeOS= open source. Lenovo is coming with heat. The new samsung chromebook is coming. Google made this to Post on the wall on let nikkas know they have arrived. Beyond that it got me excited for the XPHONE and motorola flagship in the fall. Nothing more nothing less.

Google is doing hardware and they shytted on the retina display twice. Samsung is no longer a threat to them because they have their own in house hardware team that can fill the void if samsung jump shyt to tizen. They had to price this high because they dont want to step on any OEM toes. :sadcam::deadmanny:

And all of that is still no reason for a normal consumer to buy beta this over a similarly priced Macbook or comparable Windows machine. Like Exo said, it would be a great deal at half the price. Hell., I'd buy it for that price and throw Windows/Ubuntu on it if ChromeOS didn't work for me.

how many times must i repeat its not for regular consumers. you think regular consumers will buy the google glasses too. Pixel is a statement. Let me guess the self driving car is aimed at regular consumers too :manny: :comeon::smugfavre:

Lets wait for google I/O or follow the chrome OS team to see what they cooking up. Homie post up stuff every day about chromeOS. I run my shyt in developer unstable mode to get the new feature. Chrome beta on android = a chance to see the future. They add alot of shyt to chrome beta thats not in the regular chrome browser on android right???

Google is cooking up some shyt and i want to eat

You're straddling the fence breh. The article you JUST POSTED is arguing why this is definitely good enough to justify the purchase price for the AVERAGE customer. Did you read the article or just skim and see that it was giving props to ChromeOS so you decided to post it?

It has nothing to do with Chrome. It's simple numbers.

$1299? You could cop a $700 laptop with waaaaaaaaaaayy better specs than this, AND touchscreen and then just install Linux on it if you really about that Open Source life.

Unless there's a HUGE education discount, no school administration in its right mind would spend $1299 per unit on this shyt.

Your lack of critical thinking skills is disturbing...

as i said before MS killed windows with windows 8. I like windows 8 but it suck on non-touch devices. OEM will not make a cheap non-touch windows 8 laptop. My pops owns a windows 8 Toshiba snail crawling 299$ lap top and it suck. I want to trade it and buy a chromebook. What does he do all day?? log on to facebook and youtube. My pops is the average user. He owns an android phone and never lo into the play store. He go on facebook and take pics. Most people who own windows desk top or lap top bought them because mac book cost too much. Here comes chromebook and chromeOS. Everybody use google services. it makes sense. ChromeOS has a big opportunity in business world and the hom,e because its light and easy to operate. It cant get viruses and it gets updates regularly. Its sync your mobile devices......windows killed itself. windows 8 is good but not practical for average people
