I think Donnie Darko was a weirdo kid who got killed by a fluke, when a piece of an aeroplane fell on him while he was sleeping and dreaming...
So, most of the movie was him dreaming about the pretty girl we was to afraid to spit game at, the bullies, the teachers he hated and etc...
That's my take on it...
