The only time he actually put in work is during the Cell saga, and that's only with his father babysitting him. After that the dude gets handled, even after being handed multiple power ups. That means he was already older than gohan was when he beat cell, trained in the time chamber, went to namek, almost got murked by vegeta, was left alone with piccolo who was training him on earth, watched goku die multiple times, etc. and he doesn't even fukk with fighting like that

How much harder do you seriously expect him to work at that age

Unearned? Gohan is basically spent an entire series getting his ass beat and training until the cell saga. He pulled the z sword from the stone and trained with it before the elder kai gave him a boost, so no he earned it.
