Only in these times is an 8 just ok lol

Review numbers are so messed up these days that anything below a 9 is average and everything under a 8 is trash. The funny this is a lot of those games that get high praise don’t be game changers either.

People love to talk about how revolutionary RDR 2 is but it’s honestly not that different from part 1. Even teh story is exactly alike.

Pretty crazy how things have been twisted.

A 7 game back in the day was more than enough to warrant a purchase.

Now...it might as well be a 5.

The reason for this is because people only care about popular stuff.

So the narrative has changed.

If you give me a jrpg from atlus that's a 7 I'm HAPPY. But if you give people a wrpg or jrpg from bioware or Microsoft or or Sony that's a 7 and people are looking at it sideways.

These companies now have names behind them and hype machines from fans. So a game being talked about and hyped up for months, even if it's just the fans...gets a average score of about 7.5 and it's dubbed "bad" or below average.

Currently 84 on metacritic. Looks like it might settle at around 80 which is what most people expected.
Hopefully it sells very well and Sucker punch takes in the criticism to give us a better sequel.

Not that it matters all much to me personally at this point but it doesn’t always have to drop as more reviews come out. I feel like that tends to happen to really high scoring games where someone will go out of their way to score it really low, like BOTW or TLOU2 to get clicks. I’ve seen a lot of games drop only a point or go up a point so it could very well stay in the mid 80’s in the end or drop to an 82.

As long as I can remember anything less than a 7 was considered trash by the masses. Same as American school grading scale. Idk how far back you're taking "these times", but I remember in IGNs heyday everybody joking they wouldn't give a big AAA less than a 7 (really an 8) for that reason.

I disagree with that system applied to games, and honestly as I get older I prefer journalistic reviews with no score. Because I know that negative system is embedded in me from childhood :russ:

You know how many games you probably enjoyed growing up that were rated 5’s and shyt? People are just obsessed with numbers now, not even just for games, for movies, music, sports etc. Look at how music artist flip out about not going number 1 or selling x amount of albums 1st week.

Or if a marvel movie comes out that isn’t a 90+ of RT is trash. Like everyone didn’t love last action hero growing up

People really put a lot of stock into these reviews don't they :picard:?
I usually go by game informer. They seem to align with how i feel about game most often. IGN will give some indy platformer that looks like basically mario with better textures a 10. then turn around and give a game like days gone a 6 and expect me to take their opinions seriously when selecting games to play.
Other reviewers will dock points simply because it's similiar to some game i've never heard of before. Or will dock points for orginality even though they give assassin creed 10 a 9 or something. I like my reviews to pretend other games don't exist and tell how good this game is in a vacuum, because everything has influences but chances are i didn't play the others.

Doesn’t make sense to go by scores of big gaming outlets because they have different people review each game. That’s why it doesn’t make sense when people say “OH IGN gave CoD a 10 and my game an 8!” Like no, ign is not one person. The FPS online shooter guy reviews call of duty, the JRPG guy will review dragonquest and so on.

It’s better to look for individual game reviewers who share the same taste in games as you and even then not everyone is gonna 100% agree with everyone else.

While an 8 is definitely not a bad game, and I have had fun with games that have reviewed worst, ppl have WAY more options for games, let alone entertainment these days.

It makes sense that people are more particular about what they chose to put their time into now.

I am interested in this game and will probably buy it but if push came to shove I wouldn’t be mad if I didn’t play it until PS5

I go by the outlet that tends to align with my views the most. Game Informer must have hired a good staff of reveiwers because they tend to agree with me.
Roger Ebert rip used to share my opinions on most movies. I develop a trust over time through trial and error.
