Trump thinks if he acknowledges the dead in any meaningful or sincere way, then he is acknowledging that he's done a bad job.
So he ignores and barely mentions it. These reporters never hold his feet to the flames on the death toll or figure out how to have him acknowledge it in any substantial way. Trump would probably deflect but you have to keep stabbing at him.
And he opens himself up for it because he likes to mention the death rate and brag about it. I would be Like,
"Sir you like to tout the death rate but what's to brag about having the single highest death total in all the world?"
He will say something stupid but you have to keep hammering him on it.
