I would argue it's journalistic malpractice to willingly exit that chat, and Goldberg definitely left out of fealty and deference to the powerful, which is a complete inversion of the journalistic ethic. The best rationale I've seen is that he left when the strikes took place because he figured the chat would be bushed anyway, but that doesn't track with his actions since.
