I would argue it's journalistic malpractice to willingly exit that chat, and Goldberg definitely left out of fealty and deference to the powerful, which is a complete inversion of the journalistic ethic. The best rationale I've seen is that he left when the strikes took place because he figured the chat would be bushed anyway, but that doesn't track with his actions since. The Atlantic was added to the Signal Group by accident, they didnt send him information purposefully. The White House also didnt say anything about classification until today so erring on the side of caution was smart.
