The US government is trying to bring back nuclear safety employees it fired on Thursday, but is struggling to let them know they should return to work, NBC News has reported.

The National Nuclear Security Administration workers were among hundreds of employees in the energy department who received termination letters.

An email obtained by NBC said the letters for some NNSA employees "are being rescinded, but we do not have a good way to get in touch with those personnel".

The terminations are part of massive effort by President Donald Trump to slash the ranks of the federal workforce, a project he began on his first day in office, less than a month ago.

Last week, nearly 10,000 federal workers were let go, according to multiple US outlets.

That figure was in addition to the estimated 75,000 workers who have accepted an offer from the White House to leave voluntarily in the autumn.

The nuclear security officials who were laid off on Thursday helped oversee the nation's stockpile of nuclear weapons. That included staff who are stationed at facilities where the weapons are built, according to CNN.

Attempting to reach the workers, the email, which was sent to current employees, said: "Please work with your supervisors to send this information (once you get it) to people's personal contact emails."

Trump is working to slash spending across the board, abroad and at home, and going so far as to call for eliminating the education department. He is getting help from the world's richest man, Elon Musk, who, through an effort called Doge for Department of Government Efficiency, has sent workers to comb through data at federal agencies and helped implement the "buyout" offer.

Last week, the Trump administration ordered agencies to fire nearly all probationary employees, those who had generally been in their positions for less than a year and not yet earned job protection. That included the NNSA staff members.

Altogether, the move could potentially affect hundreds of thousands of people.

Several of the Trump administration's efforts to shrink the government's size and spending have been met with legal challenges.

More than 60 lawsuits have been filed against the Trump administration since the president was inaugurated on 20 January.

I remember seeing some arguments that democrats didn't translate it well for the modern voter. When you have a full fledge document detailing every step a candidate is going to make once elected available publicly everywhere, how much "translating" is needed? Then you had those(even on thecoli) saying it was fear mongering and it would never come to fruit. Well, now everyone is now realizing that it was real and now talking about they regret their vote etc. On top of all of that, trump lied about knowing the existence the document and now puts those same architects of that document in strong positions.

I know this has been said countless of times since trump has been elected, but this country is absolutely cooked. With them laying off federal employees into an already unstable job market, housing, and food crisis. To them freezing funds for essential parts of our government, to them increasing the debt ceiling and even calls to cut medicaid, medicare, and SNAP. All while the 1%, who were already getting richer during the pandemic and after, get more rich on our loses. The sheer magnitude of the impending and irreversible changes we're about to experience is truly terrifying.

Let's assume you're correct and the country is irredeemably stupid and racist (which requires us putting aside they voted for the Democrats last time and the most popular political figures in the country are a black Democratic ex-President and his black wife). Where does this belief lead us? What are we to do with this? What is the prescription for this illness? What's the point of the Democratic Party if they're always fated to lose because of the wickedness of the American people. If you're just going to write off the voting public as idiots, why bother engaging with the Democratic Party at all?

The 2024 election was not solely fought on the grounds of Project 2025, that wasn't the only issue in the election. And even if it was, crying from the mountaintop about all the bad things that would potentially happen if your opponent wins is a complete fukking loser strategy, especially when you're currently in power. It's reactive, not proactive. Instead of coming out with your own Project 2025 featuring all the bold things you're planning to do to make the country a radically better place to live, Democrats returned to their crouched defensive posture because they have internalized this fatalistic idea that the American people are all lowly, ignominious pieces of shyt who have to be carefully tricked into not activating their latent Republicanism.
