The Elon Musk-owned social network formerly named Twitter has reportedly cut half of its election integrity team just weeks after saying it would expand the group.
Now operating under the name X, Musk's firm "is cutting around half of the global team devoted to limiting disinformation and election fraud on the platform, including the head of the group, according to three people familiar with the situation," The Information reported yesterday, adding:
NBC News later reported that it also confirmed the cuts with a source.
Musk: “Yeah, they’re gone”
Musk confirmed the cuts in a post on twitter.com, the website where you can access the X platform. "Oh you mean the 'Election Integrity' Team that was undermining election integrity? Yeah, they're gone," he wrote.The staff cuts apparently relate to a dispute between Rodericks and Musk. Rodericks went to court to halt a disciplinary process at X, claiming "that he is being subjected to a process that is 'a complete sham' over allegations that he 'demonstrated hostility' to the company for allegedly liking tweets by third parties that are critical of X, Mr. Musk and the firm's CEO Linda Yaccarino," Irish public broadcaster RTE reported last week.
As recently as August 1, the now-removed Rodericks wrote that X would be staffing up its "Threat Disruption" group. "I'll have new roles coming out in the weeks ahead, all related to investigations, elections, and engineering to build out solutions to support those!" he wrote.
That post apparently triggered the dispute with Musk. RTE reported:
In one case, Rodericks reportedly liked an X post that called Musk a "fukking dipshyt."
Musk eliminated about 80 percent of the social network's overall staff after buying Twitter in October 2022. But on August 29, X said it was "expanding our safety and elections teams to focus on combating manipulation, surfacing inauthentic accounts and closely monitoring the platform for emerging threats."
Yaccarino reiterated the plan to expand election staff in an interview with the Financial Times published yesterday. Using nearly identical language as last month's announcement, she said X is "expanding the safety and election teams all around the world to focus on combating things like manipulation, surfacing of inauthentic accounts and closely monitoring the platform for any emerging threats."
Yaccarino made a similar statement in an on-stage interview at the Code Conference yesterday. She didn't dispute that some members of the election team were axed but said, "It's an issue we take very seriously. And contrary to the comments that were made, there is a robust and growing team at X that is wrapping their arms around election integrity," according to The Verge.
No job openings listed
X's jobs website, which is at careers.twitter.com, doesn't list any openings. It simply displays an email address, careers@x.com. X also has no jobs listed on LinkedIn.Earlier this week, a European Union study found that disinformation is more prevalent on X than on Facebook and other social networks. EU regulators have reportedly urged Musk to hire more moderators and fact-checkers and is enforcing new requirements on content moderation and disinformation under the new Digital Services Act.
Many advertisers have left X due to concerns about content moderation. Musk wrote in early September that the company's "US advertising revenue is still down 60 percent."
Yaccarino said at the conference yesterday that "90 percent of the top 100 advertisers have returned to the platform in the last 12 weeks alone," and that X is on track to make a profit in early 2024, according to TechCrunch. She also reportedly said that 1,500 advertisers have returned overall.

By now, you may have heard about Elon Musk's handpicked CEO for X, Linda Yaccarino, and her disastrous interview with CNBC's Julia Boorstin at Vox Media's Code 2023 event. However, somewhat overlooked amid some of the more viral moments of the discussion, Yaccarino dropped some previously unknown stats that don't exactly paint such a rosy picture for the company:
X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, is losing daily active users under the leadership of Elon Musk.
Speaking at Vox Media's Code 2023 tech conference earlier this week, X CEO Linda Yaccarino shared that the company currently has 225 million daily active users – a decline in tens of millions or 11.6 percent of users from just before Musk acquired the company.
According to a series of tweets that Musk himself posted in November of last year, Twitter had 254.5 million daily active users the week before his takeover in late November of last year.
Following the conference, X revised its daily active user count to 245 million daily active users, according to The Information. Before specifically saying X had 225 million active users, Yaccarinno previously cited "200 to 250 million" daily active users earlier in the interview.
However, even X's revised number of 245 million daily active users would still see X lose millions or around 3.7 percent of daily active users from before Musk's acquisition.
In fact, daily active users are even down from the numbers that Musk shared last year when he was in charge. According to the aforementioned Musk tweet, Twitter had 259.4 million daily active users in mid-November 2022. Compared to the daily active users Twitter was pulling late last year under Musk's leadership, X has shed nearly 15 million users – a drop of roughly 5.6 percent.
Twitter first started sharing this metric, which the company refers to as monetizable daily active users or mDAU, years before Musk even planned to buy the company. The reason? Twitter's daily active user numbers were reliably more favorable for the company than its other metrics when it shared its quarterly reports for investors and shareholders.
When Yaccarino was first asked about user metrics during the interview, she seemingly wanted to move away from that particular conversation, saying that X had between 200 and 250 daily active users. She then moved the discussion to the platform's Communities feature, the company's answer to Facebook Groups, saying X had 50,000 communities and that engagement numbers and time spent in those communities were up since June.
Along with the daily active user metrics, Yaccarino also shared that X now has a record 550 million monthly active users. This would be up from the 541 million "monthly users" metric that Musk shared in a post in July.
It's unclear, however, just how much of the monthly active user growth has happened under Musk when compared to how the company was doing prior to his takeover. That's because in 2019, Twitter stopped reporting this number in favor of the daily active user metric. The company entered that year with 321 million monthly active users, the last publicly reported monthly active user metric directly from Twitter.
It should be noted that Musk has shifted away from both the daily and monthly active user numbers in favor of "unregretted user minutes," a metric seemingly made-up by Musk.

Just came across this the hard way. Luckily ppl dropped some working instances to use as a workaround from Nitter Instance Healthtwitter broke nitter again.
On a related note, my RSS feeds have been broken for months and I just realized that the RSS Feed is tied to the instance, so I can refresh my feeds with the latest instances to re-subscribe. Might throw them all in a txt so they I can append any new instances across the board quickly if it turns into whack-a-mole moving forward
On another note, I paid $1 to use RelayPro this month so that when I click on Reddit links in my RSS feed on my tablet, it will auto-launch within the 3rd party app. With that said, I know that this a portion of my $1 goes to Reddit which I don't want to fund, even with such a small amount so I'm looking to for alternatives that don't split $$$ w/ Reddit.
If anyone has any ideas on a clean app/PWA that I can use to open Reddit links, let me know.
