Yeah, removing anonymity could be a big silver lining in this whole thing. Obviously the bot farms will find a way around it, but if the usual suspects want to call this a town square, let’s authenticate the real everyday users. Lets see if they are willing to talk that reckless shyt when it hiding behind usernames.
Those are 2 different things, authenticating and posting under real names. If this forum did that, it would die.
"There is a total of 1.3 billion Twitter accounts, but only 330 million are active users."
Would they have to go back and authenticate already existing accounts? 1.3 billion accounts/330 million active users. That would be quite an undertaking. Numbers would drop. Would Twitter be willing to do that, knowing advertisers like big numbers.
Now, Twitter might try to authenticate beyond clicking a link in an email to activate.
Real names tho are death to social media. If Twitter did that, it could kill them. I don't see that happening at all. Maybe some sort of authentication, and then letting you pick what name you want to post under. Using real names opens yourself up to harassment, identify theft, other problems.
A "Clear Name Internet" is a dangerous place: Why anonymity matters.
