You ask the fandom, it'll be Arthur Dayne/Jaime Lannister/Barristan Selmy/Daemon Blackfyre/Aemon the Dragonknight.

Commonality? They're all sword wielders and swords get +++ points in fantasy lore.

In reality?

Robert Baratheon. He was viciously skilled with all types of weapons(during the rebellion, King Aerys made Jon Connington his Hand because he had a very martial reputation. Robert, wounded after losing the only battle he ever lost in his life was hiding in a brothel when Jon Connington surrounded the town he was in with an army. Robert came out of the brothel with a sword in hand and beat Jon Connington half to death, after killing Myles Mooton, a famous knight and five others. He did that while wounded, and with his secondary weapon.)

Outside of Barristan Selmy, nobody has a kill list like Robert Baratheon.

He's famously associated with his hammer, and the nature of battle means a swordsman has to attack key spots if someone is heavily armored but a warhammer?

They just need one good hit and bones are broken and organs pulped.

He's 6⁶, probably close to three hundred and just a legendary warrior.

Plus, the tragedy of Robert Baratheon requires him to be the literal best warrior ever, to make his downfall that much more profound.

Jaime/Daemon/whoever except maybe Dayne(cuz his sword is magic) I'd put all my money on prime Robert Baratheon.
Dayne beats Robert 8 out of 10 times.

The only category where Robert outclassed him was pure power, anyone that takes a direct hit from that warhammer is done. Dayne on the other hand is more skilled, intelligent, faster, and has a blade better than Valyrian steel. Just like the Mountain and the Smiling Knight, having superior strength and natural talent can only carry you so far. It's not going to be easy by any stretch of the imagination but it's a wrap for Robert.

There's absolutely nothing that says Dayne was more skilled than Robert, aside from the mythic aura his death gives him.

He's got the edge due to a magic sword yes, but again, Ned Stark fought both Robert and Arthur and he called Robert peerless.

Divorce Robert from what he became and see the glory of the Black Stag.

Who the hell has Dayne killed that Robert would likely lose to?

Again, outside of Selmy absolutely no one in canon has the kill list that Robert had.

In no particular order

Jaime Lannister
The Hound
The Mountain
Oberyn Martell
Eddard 'Ned' Stark
Arthur Dayne
Robert Baratheon
Brienne of Tarth
Khal Drogo
Grey Worm
Jon Snow

Thats just what we seen on screen too... gotta let him breathe a bit before I hall of fame him but Im a Stan unless he does some outrageously grimey shyt :manny:
Daemon is on the list though. Not only as one of the best swordsman but one of the most dangerous men ever in Westeros. In terms of who the GOAT is, Martin has said it's Arthur Dayne. Next up is probably Aemon Targaryen, The Dragonknight. If you had to round out the top 5 it would prob be Jamie Lannister, Barristan Selmy and Daemon I Blackfyre.

Ned Stark was a good swordsman but wasn't great, compared to his brother for instance. Likewise Robb was a better swordsman than Jon. But the GOAT Stark swordsman will be in HOTD S2...

Ive only watched the shows thats why my list is the way it is but Id love to read the books one day, including the Dunk and Egg (hope theyre still making that show especiially with HOTD success).

Robb was nicer than Jon by the end of the series? Jon was showing at at the Battle of the b*stards

Likewise I people in here disrespecting Robert Baratheon like he wouldnt go Thor on the opposition in his prime :gucci: Ned supposedly got better with age but as a younging he was nothing special

Does Aemon the Dragonknight show up anywhere or we past that? Fire & Blood is an anthology right?

Aemon is decades away, if they ever do that arc.

And for the record, the nastiest Stark in the canon isn't even really a Stark but a proto-Stark.

Brandon of the Bloody Blade would kill anyone you sent his way with a trash Bronze sword.
Man cut through hordes of giants and children of the forest so badly he turned lakes red and sent the giants running from their homeland.

Your stannery is clearly clouding your judgement and evidently your memory because Ned said Dayne was easily the best Knight he'd ever seen. Dayne doesn't have a list of prestigious victims because he wasn't a hot headed shyt starter like Robert, that has nothing to do with his level of skill. He beat everyone put in front of him, trying to fantasy book his opponents is weak.

Oh and he was considered the greatest swordsman and the ideal knight while he was still alive, that didn't occur after his death, so wrong there as well. GRRM saying he'd be even with Selmy, a member of the Mt. Rushmore of Swordsmen, without his blade isn't the diss you think it is. With it, he's unmatched.
