I strongly disagree with this assessment.

He's not lazy he's unmotivated. He's not looking for a job he's trying to find his passion. Once he found out about Paperboy you can see how he found direction. He doesn't want to be at his bullshyt job, probably didn't want to be at Princeton, but he does want to be in the music industry. It's not just a come up financially it's what he knows he can be good at.

How can you say he's using other people when he went to the radio station and put his own money up to get the record played? He did that after PB told him to kick rocks. He's sacrificing what little he has to put them on.

Him not understanding what Darius did isn't a surprise because he's not a hustler. He traded in the phone for immediate money. That wasn't money for the music side it was for his girl and daughter which is not "false moral responsibility." He can't tell her to wait a couple of months until he flips some puppies. Darius didn't understand that since him and PB don't have kids.

By all accounts by his parents, his girl, and even Paperboi in the 1st episode accused him as being a freeloader. That's why Paperboi initially didn't WANT to even fucck with him. It's why his girl ain't fucckin' with him right now. You DO realize that unmotivated is another way of saying he's lazy, right? It is IMPOSSIBLE to be motivated but lazy. How does THAT work? Earn lacks direction. He wants the bare minimum in which he doesn't wants the responsibilities that comes with being a man or even a father. And he wants to blame his faults on everything but himself. He wants to say he has a shyt job instead of seeking for another. He claims he wants to do this to provide his daughter, but doesn't spend that necessary time with her, quicker to dump her off to his parents house so he can hang out smoking with Paperboi.

His pops stated that when Earn DOES put his mind into anything he's committed to it, the PROBLEM is he doesn't. Again, he lacks direction for himself even in his own words. The only reason why he wants to be Paperboi's so-called manager is way to use someone ELSE's talents to make money instead of trying to find ways to make money himself. Paperboi isnt sure he even wants to rap. He's just doing it just to get by. He's even uncomfortable with the local fame he has now because of what Earn did.

I'm not saying that Earn isn't intelligent, doesn't have great ideas, and does have a conscious. But saying he is short sighted in his life in seeing everything in the bigger picture. The investment scene was a prime example of that. Earn is so preoccupied in trying to get back in good standing with his girl that he believes pawning a phone would win her back and got greedy thinking Darius had a quick get rich scene, again trusting others to make money for him, and Darius hooked him the fukk up and Earn missed that point. Earn ASSUMES it's because he's not making money why his girl is at odds with him, the reality is that it is because he's freeloading in life and she's tired of it because he's not taking on the responsibilities that a man, and worst yet a FATHER supposed to take on.

He's a college dropout that doesn't have his own place and barely sees or takes care of his daughter. What kind of man is that?

I agree completely with this post. I understand he has dreams, but there is nothing stopping him from handling his reaponsibilitoes and following his dreams at the same time. He ua literally laying around all day doing nothing when he xould be working somewhere, anywhere to help support his child. Thats just pride getting in the way. Im sure he could work at a fast food joint or clothing store to make money until this music thing stuff pops off.

And i can see why Darius did the trade up without explaining it fully to Earn. Earn is not acting like someone who is desperate for money. Earn is an able bodied high school grad who just sits around all day. What about that would make someone think he is broke?
