Alright now time to play fake TV reviewer and try to figure out the meaning of the episode. My takeaway is that it showed Ern being so concerned about his own reputation and people judging him that it lead to someone else's life being lost. Add in the fact that it was Paperboi who had to come in and save him. Fast forward to present day, Ern dropping out of Harvard. Everybody looking at him like a loser. Paperboi steps in to save him again. Maybe Ern comes to the realization that the only reason he's so pressed to be Paperboi's manager is for his own reputation and to give himself a purpose while it's not really the best thing for Paperboi which is fukking Paperboi's life up. And that he needs to just stand on his own two and not give a fukk how everybody else is judging.
To me, I saw it as:

Earn goes to Al when he needs to be bailed out of something

Al looks out for him out of duty, he's family, that's what family does

Earn and Al don't speak until halfway through the episode. Earn seeks him out, Al goes :ooh: "You see DBZ last night?" and Earn goes into how he needs his help because people might start picking on him.

First episode of the series, off the top of my head, I don't think Earn and Al meet until like the middle of the episode when Earn finds out he's got some buzz. He doesn't even know where he lives, has to go to his parent's house to find out. Al gives him the "I ain't seen you since my mama funeral and now you wanna piece of Paperboi:beli:"

That's the only part I didn't like. The insinuation that materialism isn't as big in white society.
It is sure.

But im from a place where one of my homeboys died over his jacket.
Smh
I dont know if that happens like that in white communities.
I look at some of the shyt posted on this site and i have a hard time believeing alotta posters have truly experience this being black shyt.
I love my peoples man.
shyt i been shot by another nikka.
Still love my peeps.
But some of you muthafukkas need to realize some of the biggest haters of black folks are other black folks!

Now that I think back I was friends with a lot of dudes where all they did in school was play basketball and that was it. They would hoop during their gym class then would skip their other classes to be in the gym to hoop some more. :patrice:Then roast people at Lunch then head out the back door and left school early

Yea I kept wondering why Earn never just left school early instead of being terrified every before class :mindblown:

Back in highschool If I was ever having a bad day I just left out the back door or at least jumped the fence during by the track during gym class

If I didn’t wanna be there I was GONE :banderas:

More exaggerations and denigration of the black community while low key propping up white society. Just about tired of this :snoop:

Going to an all black middle school and high school this episode was 100% realistic (minus the suicide). The pressures to look fly was real. Getting caught in fake gear would get you clowned. Our mindset was embarrassing looking back at it.

:comeon: I have never seen anyone clowned by an entire school for an entire day for a fake shirt. The premise itself was dumb; two kids have the same shirt so one has to be fake? Never saw that before in my life.

There is nothing wrong with looking presentable and getting fly, so I wouldn’t call the mind set embarrassing. And we are far from the only culture who acts that way.

Beyond that, the white kid saying “oh I had this on a few times this week and no one cared” is another underhanded slight to black folks. Along with another slight to black women acting like they’re materialistic, as if any middle school girl has any real depth to them or know what they like.

The past few episodes really shows me Donald Glover kind of hates being black :manny:

Exactly. Even last week when he showed a black party turning into a huge fight, but the white party was everyone having a good time and being a little gay. It’s corny.
