The subtle messages were just firing off throughout this episode.

Earn in there naming everything under the microscope and being a young bright kid, but Erica gave up the digits because Earn looking cool with his FUBU Jersey on and isn't a broke ass nikka.

I remember teachers telling my classes that the kids who are 'cool' now, the class clowns etc won't be when we all got older. The 'cool' adults were the kids that learned in school and didn't get caught up in being popular... Because at the end of the day, it's not important. Well, it shouldn't be at least.

But yet another episode that doesn't push the arc forward. What's up with Van? Can they not afford her or something?

I wouldn't be surprised still if the season ended with them having to kill off one of the main characters. So much death this season. Most of this episode was covered in his albums though, felt like a repeat almost.

If I’m not mistaken..... this season and Deadpool was shot around the same time

breh when i was watching this i was thinking to myself why hasnt anybody made a black version of freaks and geeks would be straight piff..

Man I was captivated from the very first scene. The whole premise of the first 25 minutes of this episode (the fake FUBU saga) is largely a black only experience and just like Atlanta itself, can only really be told through our eyes.

In roughly a half hour, they addressed the pride (getting new gear), status (feeling like the man and getting the girls because of your clothing), fear (finding out it is fake, thus completely negating your sense of accomplishment and feeling of self worth), comedy (getting roasted), stress (getting bullied, having the whole school know you're not rocking real stuff) and emotional toll (the suicide) something as simple as an article of clothing has on a kid. Just incredible

While it doesn't necessarily change the state of the present day characters, it adds a completely new facet to both Al and Earn's characters. It helps explain why Al let Earn hang around so long which is the core of the overall story arc.
For Al, it shows that he has been looking out and coming through for Earn basically all of their lives which is (was) a completely different side of his character. Up to this point, Al has been portrayed as the guy who just wants his money and to keep it real. For Earn, it shows that he's been taking Ls for years which shows why he's typically so (outside of the Tracy fight) when bad shyt happens.

Earn's mom's talk about having to dress respectable as a black man sounds like the talk Al had with Earn in the strip club about how if you dress like a regular nikka, you'll get treated like a regular nikka.

I was real insecure about my hairline. I would get roasted but nothing crazy because I was from a side of town that was with the shyts so nikkas treaded lightly. With that being said I was shook. I can relate to rushing out when that bell rang.
