I used to work in restaurants.

Whats funny is that we used to call a $5 tip from black folks "The Standard" cuz nikkas would tip $5 for everything...from a $30 tab, to a $200 tab.


What cheap people dont understand is that when you tip well, you will eventually get taken care of. People will remember you, and want to work for you.
But when you get stamped as cheap nobody is going to give a fuk...and then the cheap person thinks the world is out to get that and say "man fuk tipping".

it's a vicious cycle though.

say waiters see black people and automatically stereotype them thinking they aren't gonna tip well. so the staff gives them attitude and bad service or maybe service not as good as other clients (sometimes it's even subconscious). then the black people who got the bad service figure "well fukk you too" and don't tip or tip very little. then the waiters go "i knew it, them black folks are cheap as fukk on tips" and when they see the next black person it's rinse and repeat.

and a FYI...black servers (for the most part) hate serving black folks just as much as white people.

Most people don't frequent places that often if they are that opposed towards tipping. They would rarely see that proposed benefit.

i understand people's gripes w the restaurant industry and compensation structure for service people. but why take it out on the wait staff? if you're going to frequent the establishment and line the owner's pockets anyway. i mean let's be real, most people take waiting jobs as a last resort. especially in this economy. most people aren't aspiring to serve food as their career. so why punish these people to spite the owners?

i don't know about all that. i actually make it a point to tip other black people way more than i'd tip white people. it really doesn't matter though why you get bad service. sometimes it's because the waiter thinks you're not gonna tip him anyway (which ends up becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy) sometimes it's because the waiter is just a jerk, sometimes it's because he's having a bad day, etc. whatever it is, i think tips should be to your discretion.

my whole problem with tipping is not the concept itself. in fact, i think it's a beautiful thing in theory. the staff goes the extra mile to make sure you have a pleasant evening and experience. you reward him/her with a little something extra. there is gratitude on both sides and everyone is happy. beautiful concept.

they perverted that concept by making the tip expected. so now you're not giving a tip cause you got good service. you're giving the tip because of social pressure and the waiter feels entitled to it. they took the generosity out of the concept.

just raise the salary to minimum wage and take out the tips OR leave it as is and make the 15% tip mandatory in the bill. and if the clients don't feel like tipping they just don,t go there. but i have a feeling neither the waiters or managers would like that because they both want to have their cake and eat it too.

whether you agree or not, 5 bucks on a 47 dollar tab isn't a decent tip by tipping standards. you said yourself the service was good. you may not agree w common tipping standards but you shouldn't be surprised he was annoyed.

But as the people in this thread show, they wouldn't give a fukk about the race of the person giving them the service. They don't believe in tipping, I know someone that use to be a waitress that's black and said the same thing about black people not tipping.

Yup. Not sure why they think not tipping is gonna cause the owners to change the way they pay waiters.

Stories about spending $60 on a meal and removing the added gratuity on some, "I'm not helping the owners with their fukked up system" does absolutely nothing to the owners.

You not tipping the waiter does nothing to hurt the owner cause he got your $60 and he's still only paying the waiter $2-3/hr.

The system won't change because there's a bunch of people willing to jump at the chance for that job.

And saying "Get another job if you don't like it" does nothing, do people thing the waiter job is gonna disappear?

trust me breh...ive worked in more than one restaurant...you may do that, but there are plenty of black folk that shyt on their own kind and treat em like shyt when they are out eating. The restaurant industry is one place ive been that black people will openly shyt on other blacks in front of white people. It wasnt my style, but it happens.

The reason restaurants here use the tip system is because restaurants dont bring in that much money. If restaurants had to pay a servers wage it would be impossible to stay open...especially nicer places...it would be like going to eat at KFC.
Some of the best service you will receive is in this country...there is a total different experience in other countries.

i do that sometimes when ordering food (telling them how much to give me back) but on a couple of occasions you'd get the delivery dude trying to act like he's looking for change saying "aw man, i only have a _____bill wait a sec" then they continue searching thinking you'll get impatient and just say fukk it...i just stand there and keep waiting.
