Got damnit man. This might be better than bandana
I listened to Bandana again and I like it but god damn the mix is atrocious. Which is frustrating because out of the big 4 sample-based albums he's done (Pinata, Bandana, Alfredo, & Fetti) I think it's arguably the best.

And I said earlier in the thread that I rarely rarellyyy complain about shyt like mixing. I have both the regular and director's cut and they both have Freddie sounding like he's rapping inside of a tin can in places, and the beat is mixed way too loud on most songs. @hex you have the Director's Cut right? I swear that version is the better version of the album, but maybe it's just me, but it also seems to be mixed worse than the regular version? Am I tripping? Play Massage Seats or Palmolive on each. I swear you can hear Gibbs a little better on the regular version.

I like Afredo right now simply because Al's used the same engineer for well over a decade now and he's really good. I can understand Gibbs perfectly on this album.

Yeah and given how methodical Madlib is it might be a stylistic choice. As far as the Director's Cut being mixed kinda bad. Because it's sort of meant to be like a DJ spinning his set.
I got "Bandana" off Itunes and....I dunno. I thought the mix was fine. But then again I'm used to terrible quality mixes from the 80's and 90's, so what the fukk do I know? :mjlol:

35 minutes, no skips, no disruptions. Even looping from track 10 back to track 1, there are times where I don’t even realize points when I’m moving on to the next track. It’s so perfectly sequenced and paced. This is the one right here. I know Freddie said he wanted the $500 Ounces track, but it wouldn’t have fit on this. As great as that beat is, and the lineup that comes with it. This album is concise, gets in, does the damn thing, and gets the fukk out. As much acclaim as it receives, I’ll still consider it largely underrated. It’s rare we get albums like this, anymore. Not a single missed opportunity.

Gibbs branches out into introspective tracks too and a lil political shyt too....its not all just coke raps. I'd say he's more varied than Pusha. A song like "Insecurities", "Deeper" , "Situations"....show he not afraid to dig a lil deeper and even show vulnerability

Pusha just has a more expressive voice, while Freddie is more monotone . Skill wise they are equals, Gibbs has a slightly better pen

I gotta give Alfredo another chance today...I'd like it but it wasnt hitting me for some reason...I think like slightly busier production and this is way more background music

Same for me, this was the alchemist project I've most been looking forward to and I ended up liking damn near every other album he's put out in the last year over this one.

Its not even that there weren't bars and quotables or the beats were bad, for some reason just isn't keeping my interest when I listen to it, and I've listened to it 5-6 times already since I really do want to like it. Maybe just not for me.

Frank Lucas, God is perfect, and All Glass hit for me, can leave the rest

Like I said before, to me, the mixing on Bandana seems like a stylistic choice. It’s almost a way of leveling the playing field between the beats and the raps. It also makes it feel much more rough around the edges. I disagree with the direction on it as well. I wouldn’t mind or be surprised if they released a remastered version. Reminds me of some Blu shyt, where the project is dope, but it’s hampered by shytty mixing. Honestly, though, I think they decided to make it sound rough and raw intentionally. No way it wasn’t an intentional, vetted out decision. And yeah, Alfredo was mixed and mastered flawlessly. Al has the best behind him with Eddie and Joe.

Is it me or does Freddie Gibbs talk about the same 3 things in every song?:patrice:

Yea he’s got nice wordplay and rapping skills but content wise he’s no better than the next man :hubie:

Maybe is just this album where he’s especially redundant :yeshrug:
I dunno I think he's a versatile emcee. He gets introspective on Skinny Suge, Babies & Fools, and Scottie Beam. Besides the Alfredo joints, these are several good introspective, storytelling, and concept joints by Gibbs.

Def a Dope verse but he didnt out rap Fred, all cats have to do is post the lyrics to both verses, Fred was flowing on that piece so well it was easy to miss his bars:manny:. Benny is on that template vibe to me just like Ross where I see where the verse is heading technically every time, very meat and potatoes type of rapper but that's not always a bad thing.

Almost Jadakiss like. That’s why the Vol,1 Jay comparisons are laughable imo. Can you craft a Where I’m From?. Dudes can barely craft 3 16s plus hook songs these days.

Benny a monster though.
