IMO not quite. But close. To me, Pinata is a 5, Bandana is a 4.75, and Alfredo is a 4.5. That could go up a little bit but off 5 listens now, I don't expect it to drop.

Bandana has some more obscure samples in places (like on Massage Seats) and is also about 10 minutes longer.

The vibe here is a little bit different. There's a few really hard records, but there's also 2-3 introspective joints, and definitely some smooth vibe out tracks as well.

Honestly it sounds like its own beast. Pinata and Bandana have their own vibes, and this is a unique 3rd vibe. It's definitely closer to Bandana than Pinata...but I don't think any of them really sound like each other. And even though I wasn't counting Fetti because it featured Currensy, I'd also say Alfredo is very different than that too.
It might be too soon but Bandana surpassed Pinata to me

I could be saying that cause its fresher though :patrice:

My initial thoughts confirmed. For real, not a downside to the record. On the next one, I hope they really make it a throwdown of beats vs raps. But this project has absolutely everything in its right place. That second project that’s on my wishlist probably wouldn’t be as good as what we have right here, honestly.

Al: “With this project, I laid down the music, but the beats get out of the way so he can do what he does,” the producer says about Gibbs. “I’m proud of the beats, but I know that he showed off.”

Just did it. Daps and rep. fukk you for throwing more water on me as I'm drowning in music but thanks for putting me on. Checking out the first joint and I'm liking it so far!

Peep Director's Cut Scene Two by Ransom if you haven't.

No worries - shyt like Shabazz is my palate cleanser for a lot of the goon shyt I listen to. That and old skool Ethiopian Jazz compilations hold me down when I need a change of pace.

:salute:

I'll add it to my queue. I've been meaning to double back for 'Reasonable Drought' too.

I been saying this :manny:

Bandana was a lot more tighter to me. And both Lib' & Gibbs leveled up the 2nd time around. And unlike Pinata, no feature is wasted compared to some of them nikkas who was spittin' trash on Pinata.:martin:

If @TheDarceKnight got Pinata at a 5 and Bandana at a 4.75, it's the other way around for me, lol.

I respect that. I had that opinion for a little bit. Bandana Gibbs' rhymes are elevated and Madlib's production is more varied and interesting. And I like that Gibbs has less features on there. I actually think on a technical level that Bandana is better than Pinata.

This may sound stupid but there's just a thing with Pinata where I waited for it for years and it met my expectations, and with the nostalgia factor I just have so many amazing life memories to that album. And it was the FIRST time hearing Gibbs and Madlib, and it's such got a special place in my heart that puts it slightly above Bandana.

But if I'd heard Bandana first I guarantee I'd like it more, because in many ways it is the better album.

EDIT: and yeah, way too many emcees on the final track, and no way Mac Miller should've has the closing verse on the album. Personally I play the deluxe version with Deep and Terrorist as the final songs.

Tell me about putting together “All Glass,” the song that closes the record.

Freddie Gibbs: I visualized how I wanted to
rap on it. I got a visualization of a church and some stained glass because of the organs in the beat. Then, I was just thinking about crack and how it could be hard as ever. I was thinking about meth and all kind of shyt. It all culminated into that shyt.

It's not stupid at all breh. Music comes out and hits us all different based on our expectations, anticipation and overall what we go going on in our lives as we vibing to it.

I have the same opinion as you on Pinata vs Bandana...damn near word for word.

As much as I loved Bandana and wont knock anyone who thinks it's their best project, there is something about that first time hearing a MadGibbs project and the replay value on that joint when it dropped was and still is :banderas:

I rank them and Alfredo exactly the same...Alfredo is right there but a tiny notch below IMO.

"Bury me with ratchets
Let the feds tell it, apparently I'm active
Gucci hoodie smell like kerosine and ashes
Don't get carried away
I been up, and look how carefully I stack it
Got your advance check buried in the mattress
We the Yankees on a pennant run
You needed soldiers, I heard you rented some
Tellin' war stories and you ain't been in none
But look what I converted to
From lettin' burners loose out convertibles (Skrrt)
My bytch gon' be the driver for a purse or two
Nah, my finger never could point
You know p*ssy best when it's moist
Got a hammer and a brick from a plug I met in the joint
Miami, Super Bowl weekend, I got head in a Royce (Uh-huh)
We chasin' cheddar of course, I wouldn't care if it's Deutsch (nikka, fukk)
It was either law school or dog food
If I was makin' y'all moves, we all lose
Make these sucker nikkas pay, those was our rules (Brrt)
You gon' need more guns and lucky horseshoes
Never took an L, but a few lost to mine (A few)
New loft downtown and this view was hard to find
Sold lines to abusers, now abuse y'all with lines
I'm in this black thing, Heem just a few cars behind
I bought two of everything, they said, "Dude lost his mind" (Ayy, you crazy)
Two gold Cubans like I'm tryin' too hard to shine
Two whips, one a coupe that's too small to drive (What else?)
Two-car garage (Uh-huh), two-broad massage, yeah"

This quote here conveys how I feel Alchemist... he's a real chemist with the sonics and arrangements but he gets out of the rappers way. So his stripped down, slow beats are for the rapper to shine, but sometimes it ain't exciting enough for me.

In contrast, Madlib is a whole different animal by himself and sometimes it feels like Gibbs is tryna catch up to HIM. I haven't stopped playing Bandana since day 1. But Gibbs is one of the few rappers I trust to attack these stripped down Al beats.

Going to pour up and sit with this tonight.
