After a second spin, I like it a lot. Maybe more than Bandana. I'll support by copping a CD. Good to see an artist offer physical media that's not a vinyl.

This quote here conveys how I feel Alchemist... he's a real chemist with the sonics and arrangements but he gets out of the rappers way. So his stripped down, slow beats are for the rapper to shine, but sometimes it ain't exciting enough for me.

In contrast, Madlib is a whole different animal by himself and sometimes it feels like Gibbs is tryna catch up to HIM. I haven't stopped playing Bandana since day 1. But Gibbs is one of the few rappers I trust to attack these stripped down Al beats.

Going to pour up and sit with this tonight.
I also think some of this comes down to how they make music together. The process on Bandana may have been different, but for Pinata Gibbs had Madlib send him the beats from afar, and then he attacked them. I think he did it for a lot of of Bandana too. He's said that he likes when he doesn't get to pick Madib's beats. And either by Freddie's request or Madlib's nature, Madlib sends Freddie stuff that he thinks will challenge him (like Massage Seats.) They're friends but they don't really kick it a lot when they aren't promoting albums, and Madlib is very private, even to frequent collaborators. A surprising amount of MadGibbs music has been made without them in the room together.

Meanwhile Freddie and Al made this album together for all of it, with Freddie going through beats and picking what he liked, and they hung out for the making of the entire album. Al said he had a few beats (like Skinny Suge) that he was hoping Freddie would take, but he didn't just send a bag over like Madlib does.

On Alfredo it's Freddie picking all the beats that he wants to rap over. That might be part of the reason Freddie sounds like he's being challenged on Pinata and Bandana by Madlib (because he actually is) moreso than on Alfredo.

It’s a win/win situation for Gibbs as gets to rap on such high level production from Al and Madlib.

it's better than bandana, bandana wasn't that good :francis: not after when you drop a classic like pinata.

Gibbs has the midas touch.

Who would have thought 10 years ago he would have a better discography than cole and drake
Gibbs also got a classic, while both cole and drake got none. he got a classic before both of em. gibbs a legend. him and pusha t remind me of the 90s.:wow:
