See, we're feeling the downside of the shyt the baby boomers learned. My mom's generation (HS c/o 1976) was taught by their blue collar parents, "go to college, get a degree, learn about them new fangled computers, you'll make good money and get a job right out of college." That shyt was true for them, and they passed it down to us. But, shyt is totally different now. EVERYBODY is going to college and not everybody is informed about the dangers of student loans, the job situation, and applying their skillset. People think getting a degree from [insert for profit college here] will get them a nice paying job.

I'm a product of a non-STEM major people laugh at, Mass Communication, and I was a bit perplexed when I didn't get a job after I graduated (2012). I wasn't making real bread until April last year, damn near a year after I graduated. I'm not in the field I want to be, but I'm making 3x the amount of money my fellow mass comm grades make out the gate. Sometimes, landing a gig outside your desired field doesn't hurt as a starting point.

In summation, a degree isn't a golden ticket anymore.

Exactly. The STEM majors will go through something like the Lawyer situation where everyone is doing it and getting paid like shyt.

nah. i think because STEM is dominated by Asians that you will always have a good chance at a job if you're competent and American. its not like lawyers where most of them are American to start with.

but once again, where does the entitlement come from anyway? this generation is gonna have to learn how to grind and work. nothing was ever promised. you can't have a 2.5 gpa in any major with no work experience and expect to get a job. That's just dumb. even if you're a nuclear engineer, a 1.9 gpa won't help you. kids need to smarten up. the problem is they've been coddled their whole life and only taught how to follow.

Nah, the GPA system is set up for someone always losing, regardless. We need to revamp the education system to embrace alternative education like what TED is explaining

ok cool, but everybody can't have their dream job regardless. So who's going to take the L? there are more students in college than jobs available... so what's next?

entrepreneurship w/ a cheap start up and trade schools. That is the only way at this point to grow the economy that benefits the 98%

funny thing is we never have enough people at my company and we struggle to have enough resources for all the projects that have.

i see the same thing at many companies.

Then I read articles like this. Where is the disconnect? What is going on out there? Are people really that lazy?

honestly if get a degree in Accounting or STEM you get a job that starts at 60k+ no problem. It seems so easy. I understand why people struggle out there. Wake up people! we cant all be Psychologists, actors and artists.

the wild shyt about this is that once you start getting paid you can do whatever.

i make good money and there are so many people that hit me up for jobs because I've built up a desired skillset and a reputation of credible workmanship. all I have is an engineering degree. so when I read reports like this I'm like :mindblown: ... It really is supply and demand. the problem is that you gotta get your foot in the door first.

I have a poli sci degree and currently doing my master's in public policy (more applied stuff, tangible) and I've been working full time for 2 years... I got lucky with the job I have because I interned in the company before and they just happened to have openings. Being in DC also helps because of the amount of opportunity.

Benefits are good, pay could always be better but I can't complain at all seeing friends struggling. Plus, I've noticed the same thing... it seems every week people are e-mailing me or texting me about jobs like I'm ballin like that or something... I don't got that kinda connects here :manny:

Nope...

Since the beginning of time, math has never been popular with students.
Only a select few like it.

i always wonder the same thing. there aren't enough highly trained/educated Americans to fill the jobs that need them. that's why i said once you get work experience, it's so much easier to get jobs. I'm not even looking and I got 3 jobs offers in the past few months.

bottom line is people don't want to take a job in an area they're not interested in. saem thing happened with my homegirl. she couldn't find a job out of undergrad so she got a masters. she couldn't find a job after that so now she's getting her phD. I'm like you mean to tell me there were NO jobs you couldve had as a pretty girl with a science based major then she was like "they're not the jobs I want tho. I want to do something in my field"

:snoop:

people gotta smarten up. Okay maybe you want to be a zoologist and you have the degree. but if there are no jobs available maybe you should take a job as a clerk for a zoo or a tour guide or something. I dunno, get closer to your job and your industry and network your way into your dream job. i been working 6 years and finally I can now transition out of engineering into marketing because I have that unique skillset.

oh and lastly, people need to be open to different locations. we can't all live in the big nice city. people look at me crazy for being in Nebraska but my career growth here is crazy. you can live anywhere for two years.

Exactly people don't realize this won't happen for two reasons.
1. the fact that it's not popular is what drives the demand for the job and high salaries
2. The shyt is actually hard!

as an engineer, it's actually pretty disrespectful when people assume anybody can be one. i watched the brightest high school kids quit or get weeded out when i was in college. most math-based majors fukking suck to study.

because it doesn't vibe with our culture. we're more creative and artistic than Asians and Indians. (India is part of the continent Asia btw. :mjpls: ) I'm an engineer myself, and believe it or not, we need creative types. it's what keeps America at the forefront of innovation.
That's not good enough. You realize that after world war II the united states gave refuge to nazi scientists right? They did so not just because they were innovative enough to create things, but because they UNDERSTOOD math, classical physics, and quantum mechanics in ways that no one else did. We needed these scientists so we could have an upper hand in the nuclear arms race against russia.

It's the same thing with everything else. Having creativity is good, but its useless if you don't even have a canvas to paint on. Einstein was a highly creative person. But his creativity would have NEVER been heard of if he didn't spend his life studying physics. Studying physics gave him the canvas to paint his creativity.

Nikola Tesla, Newton, Steve Jobs, you can name ANY famous person who contributed something great to this earth, and you'll see that their creativity would not have gotten them anywhere without a solid foundation in the sciences.

So I don't agree that its ok for blacks to not go into science because it doesn't "vibe with our culture." Out culture is degenerative so it needs to be completely turned upside down.

My whole point is, the key to blacks achieving success in this country or anywhere in the world is primarily based on the SKILLS we have that people are willing to pay for. There were NAZI scientists who had skills so valuable they had the luxury of escaping the death penalty! All these asians and indians are coming to the united states because they know once they equip themselves with skills through our education system they can achieve economic mobility. There are CERTAINLY a number of creative black people living in huts in africa, or the ghettos in detroit, and yet where does their creativity get them? No where because they don't have a skill set in which they can apply their creativity!

I agree with you but to clarify, I was speaking on American culture in general. obviously blacks are the GOAT creative people but America does drive a lot of innovation and is envied by other countries.

That's not true at all. The "STEM shortage" is a myth.
