Neymar has a good chance at the Ballon D'Or outside of Barca. Sid Lowe wrote an article about how the Barcelona media put Messi front and center after the PSG comeback when Neymar was by far the best player on the pitch and the best Barca player over those 2 legs, how far that is true with regards to him leaving is questionable but it does reflect on the perception problem. The French league is not as prestigious but if you look at how far Barcelona, Real, Bayern have come since Chelsea won the CL in 2012 it makes no difference how you perform in a league campaign. 10 years back winning a league title might have given a player a boost but the way the talent has been hoarded by a few clubs it has made league games a formality. UEFA's best midfield category are all Real midfielders and before Neymar left you could argue that 4 of the top 5 players in the world played for 2 teams. Only Juve and Atletico have managed to break through and that is with organization and coaching.

Ibra didn't do much for PSG in the CL against the bigger teams, Veratti was more of a standout in many of their games. As long as Messi/Ronaldo play for their respective teams the success of the team will be attributed to them which is a significant barrier to a Ballon D'or. DiMaria played out of his mind in 2014 in the second half of the season but his contribution is still overshadowed by Ronaldo. Real last season had a great team performance but the narrative will always be about Ronaldo. Suarez scored 40 goals in the league and 59 in total in that one season but did not sniff the top 3.
