This movie getting attacked from all sorts of angles

but everyone who has watched it so far has said its good :patrice:

On a surface level. If you look at from a stand point of pure action fantasy like black panther and you are somewhat ignorant about african culture I can see why someone would say its good. Cause in that aspect its a standard 2022 movie with the standard sprinkles of woman empowerment and including a gay character etc. But when you look at it as a movie that is supposed to be based in Africa in the 1800 and early 1900 its pretty ridiculous. Not even getting into the historical inaccuracies. The accents alone are terrible. The fact that 2 white women wrote this movie is also very apparent cause its all surface level. There is no need for essays or dissertations cause this movie aint that deep. Its Disney feel good movie status.

As far as the boycott stuff. Kind of silly cause the movie is complete work of fiction and just based on historical figures. They never said it was based on a true story or historically accurate. Folks have no problem supporting fictional movies and shows of racist europeans and colonizers. Whether its spartans and movies like 300 or game of thrones or the 100s of fantasy movies about Europe in ww2. etc..

It should be attacked. You would never see a Jewish person making a movie showing Nazis as being virtuous. That is literally what is happening in that movie about Dahomey. There was nothing virtuous about Dahomey as it was nothing but a little piece of shyt kingdom that was a vassal State to the Yoruba Oyo Empire. Dahomey literally had to pay Oyo tribute or they would get bytch slapped into oblivion. Dahomey only gained power and wealth after becoming the slave catching arm of White people. Dahomey literally conspired with White people in the slave trade era and the Europeans gave Dahomey arms which was done for Dahomey to attack other Black people to sale them as slaves to the Europeans.

Dahomey did more damage to Black people than any rapper ever did and Dahomey only stopped after their White daddies attacked them in order to colonize that shythole kingdom. But people will give Viola Davis and those other heifers pushing that Black female empowerment bullshyt a pass for doing a low-key humble brag for slave catching nikkas and their White daddies. Those same people will then turn around and attack rappers. Basic DNA testing will show that if you have Togo/Benin DNA then that is almost certainly because of Dahomey. That movie is a complete insult to our ancestors that were attacked and/or murdered in the transatlantic slave trade.

I think people would be upset if a WW2 film came out that portrayed fascists in a sympathetic light.

I think some Africans in the diaspora are annoyed because potentially their ancestors were sold into slavery by figures who are lionized in this film.

Also if you have recent Yoruba ancestry.

Above The Clouds
I keep hearing and reading that the Dahomey Kingdom raided and used slaves so they won't watch the movie.

My response: Well, duh! Guess what!? Many historical polities, peoples and individuals did some fukked up stuff, including owning and selling slaves from Rome, Ancient Greece, The British Empire, The Persian states, The Aztecs, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and many more. Yet, we (me included) still watch fictional media based on historical polities, peoples and individuals.

I'm not watching The Woman King because it looks like crap not because of slavery and other historical atrocities.

Also can we dead the whole 'black people sold other black people as slaves' canard. It's such a simplistic view of history. Black people aren't a unified, monolithic group (never was or never will be). Nobody uses the argument of 'white people sold other white people as slaves' or 'Amerindian people sold other Amerindian people as slaves'. Why? because they know that Amerindians, whites etc aren't a monolith. Simple.

This bolded piece right here. If there was such a thing as black people back then, Africa would be a country instead of continent and it’s possible America wouldn’t exist.

Somewhat, but some Yoruba DNA also stemmed from the Oyo Civil War. That war flooded the slave market because the Yoruba were getting their internal enemies up out of there which took their attention off of beating the brakes off of those Dahomey bum bytches. However you are correct, because Dahomey did attack some of the westernmost Yoruba in modern day Nigeria and modern day Benin.

In fact it is an insult that Dahomey named its modern country after the Empire of Benin, because the Empire of Benin banned slave trading back in the 1500s. So now people that don't know history think that the modern country of Benin is the same as the Empire of Benin.

Benin is seen in oral history within Southern Nigeria as the origin place of many peoples. My paternal ancestral lore has us fleeing Benin around the 1500s from a tyrannical emperor, before we became Igbo.

Lagos started off as a Benin war camp.

An Edo friend told me Benin’s language is not spoken widely in Southern Nigeria because they refused to teach Edo to non-native speakers

I saw they edited Wikipedia in conjunction with the movie saying the women wanted to trade palm oil but the men were obsessed with slave trading.

This is like saying every black man was Bigger Long while Signare or Osu women or Madam Tinubu never existed

fukk that nikka Gezo though, hope he is burning in hell with the rest of the worlds Monarchs

They will need to bring forth a peer reviewed history paper from an academic journal for me to believe them.

There are plenty of fantasy shows and movies that show fascists in sympathetic light and show depth and layers to nazi's etc. The man in high castle comes to mind as an example of a big budget highly acclaimed show that humanized Nazi's. Plenty of movies and shows show facists as more than just simple mindless evil monsters.

But with regards to BLACK people. ALL those europeans they idolize would be considered our Nazi's and facists. But yall will watch movies that idolize and paint them in a positive light. Abe lincoln and the founding fathers who all owned slaves.. Christopher Columbus, Napolean Bonaparte, English royal family etc.. All these cacs killed, enslaved and terrorized black people around the globe. You would have to boycott 50% of movies and tv shows if that was the criteria.
