They originally hyped the movie by implying that finn was gonna be the lead in the first movie and he turned out to be comic relief.

He really didn't even have to be the lead or a jedi, they could have used his background to set him up as a badass ex stormtrooper or something similar to solo in the original trilogy.

What they have currently is a black jar jar binks.

He's not really comic relief he's one of the 3 main characters. I never really had an issue with him nor did I know there was all this hate with the character until I read about him here. He's a reluctant hero on a arc to becoming something better. He didn't wanna be a stormtrooper nor when he quit that did he wanna save the galaxy. He's tried to ditch the resistance multiple times. Of the main 3 he's probably the most normal person. He got caught up in all this shyt and made a few friends who he cares about but he'd rather not have the weight of the world on his shoulders. I'm guessing in the 3rd movie he's gonna make the transition to full hero and embrace the role.

Sounds like people are upset because the character isn't who they want him to be and are exaggerating who he is for dramatic effect. Jar Jar is offensive. Finn is just a regular guy caught up in extraordinary circumstances who's struggling to adjust to something he never asked for.

I'd say that he wasn't comic relief until the Last Jedi. They do tend to over exaggerate things. As far as the 3 main characters go, there's really only 1 and they missed the opportunity to develop the other 2, especially FInn. He was something never seen in a SW film, and broke his conditioning. But he had some excellent moments in Force Awakens.

His reluctant hero arc was used in the first, and it was good, but then they recycled, almost verbatim the same thing in second, ,instead of pushing it forward. So, I'd say he's comic relief since Last Jedi. But overall, he doesn't deserve half the hate he gets here.
