I'm like...story wise, what's the point of the Arms then at all if you can beat the game w/o even gettign them all and is essentially not only the preferred thing to do, but also, the game apparently steers you in that direction to do so?

This was probably one of the things that were cut in order to meet the deadline. The Arms will make you that much stronger, but in terms of taking out the final boss, you don't need a ton of them at all, and it's weird how it ended up like that.

As much as I love the game, it needed another six months.

Coli.
I believe you can get them all before beating the game.
Around the end of chapter 7 I started to get bored with the game so I focused on doing story missions only.
I think the only thing you CANT do before beating the game is turning the car into a plane. Everything else is technically accessible but unless you did a lot of grinding you wouldnt be strong enough to do.
For example, the Crestholm Channels dungeon I did last night where you get the upgraded headlights has some pretty strong monsters in there, and it has a legendary final boss that will destroy you if you aren't at least lvl 40 and have a ton of elixers and phoenix downs.
Same goes with some of the higher level hunts.
you dont have to do the dungeons to get the flying car all you have to do it destroy all the niff bases and you destroy two of them during the story and you can go beat the 3rd one if you over lv before the end of the game

Alright so this is my first post in arcadium since the split.

Everything @Kamikaze Revy has said is right about this game

I got it for christmas

Beat it yesterday

Got to level 71/72 for everyone. Got all of the special weapons with two exceptions

The good
  • I enjoy the active combat and looked forwaard to boss battles and dungeons a lot
  • I actually liked the story and relationship of the four guys...they really seemed like some friends on adventure.
  • Hunts are fun as fukk
  • I liked the idea of finding ingredients for health powerups
  • Chocobo rentals are cool
  • Travel was more convenient than previous FF
  • The main antagonist was pretty fukkin evil...though his motivations......? See the bad
  • The bosses...a see a lot of heat here, but i liked the dungeon boss battles a lot. They felt dramatic and beating them was fun.
  • I liked upgrading the weapons and ended with engine blade iii...never got ultima weapon because i thought i could get it before i beat the game...more on that later. And was there a masamune?
The bad
  • What the fukk was going on half the time. I am a FF veteran (1,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, now this...did not play the teens) and jesus. This was a clusterfukk. I had a hard time figuring out who was on whos side, and suddenly im being recruited the whole half of the game? But the chancellor is still evil? And the dude with the white hair was on my side?
  • Too many damn treasure hunts for sidemissions...bad even for a FF game.
  • "Save the crystal" as ANOTHER PLOT FOR FINAL FANTASY. They did this shyt literally ten games ago on FFV
  • Charactors that didnt fukking matter after one appearance..What the fukk was up with the woman you negotiated with in chapter 10? .you never saw her again...Cor...here today gone tomorrow...Iris...did i miss something major? Its like in ffvii if you meet hojo and you never hear from him again. Or yuffie is not playable...weird as fukk.
  • The difficulty....was null..i saw game over ONCE and that was because i didnt understand the train / ship battle....i did every dungeon i found and didnt die once. I would 3 iron and red giants and not die...the only guy who faded me and i had to run was demon wall in chapter 15. This game is easy as fukk.
  • If the game was going to be THAT CLOSED AND LINEAR they shouldve made it more clear after you get on the boat. They said "you cant return for some time" but thats a warnning that they give a lot. I left a lot on the table i would have waited on before moving on. What a piece of shyt for that alone. I like to do completion as mucha s possible before fighting the boss. I didnt even do chocobo racing because thats like last on my list but i wanted to do it. Now that i beat the game, idgaf anymore especially after chapters 10-15.
  • That injured motherfukker slowing me down
The inexcusable
  • No control or obvious control over summons. What. The fukk.
  • This entire game is basically helping Noctis, a spoiled prince with divine right, stop an immortal guy from taking his throne...and his body guards helping him. Okay.
  • Ridiculous spawns during night travel. At least i got good lvl up and never died though.
  • The OBVIOUS gaps in story that arent solved with that fukkin dog
  • So i never did the "go back in time" thing because it seemed inconsequential
  • Leveling up did not seem nearly as rewarding as previous FF. If i go up ten lvels at once (this has happened to me during this game in the 30-40s) i should be CLEARLY MORE POWERFUL IN EVERY WAY.
As said by kamikaze, ive never seen a game fall apart like that other than maybe resident evil 5 at the end....it was a straight up A, maybe an a+ before i got on the boat...after that, it took it down to a B- at highest. So tedious at the end. I am still mad that it sent me on a multiple hours long path to the final boss with no return until you win.

Agree 100% and you stated everything clearly with no obvious bias one way or the other.
Yes there was a Masamune. It came with the day one edition as DLC.
Nothing major, just a big sword with decent damage for the beginning of the game.
I think what you'll see in the arcadium is the people that are praising this game and defending it passionately have not beaten it yet. You really aren't exposed to any major complaints until the 9th chapter and things don't really slow down until the 8th chapter, even though by then I was already getting burnt out with the game.
The combat in this game is the most forgiving I have ever seen in an RPG. It looks great on screen and is fun most of the time, but when you start to grind (which grinding in this game is pointless since it can easily be beaten with lvl 30 characters like I did) you'll notice how boring the game can get.
Like I said before, this game is going to be polarizing for years to come because of how much potential it had. They had a lot of good things going for them until they let it all fall apart half way through the game.

LOL, you making me almost not want to finish the game or got pass my current point of the game. I'm at chapter 8 now and right at the point where I can start to chapter 9, but I started doing side quests and looking for more royal arms. I'm at about level 45 now. Funny, you were initially behind me and then just plowed thru the rest of the story missions in over a weekend.

You're grossly over powered for this game. Stop doing side quests and finish the story.
I'll try to keep this as spoiler free as possible while still trying to get my point across and save you a lot of time and frustration.
In chapter 9 (or 10 I don't remember exactly) something is going to happen that is going to completely negate all the progress you've done so far. Your level or gear wont matter at all.
Your level or gear will not matter again until the final scene, at which point all you are going to need is as many curative items you can afford. No status affect items will be necessary at all.
You will only take direct HP damage. I destroyed this game with a ton of Hi potions, a few elixers and 2 or 3 phoenix downs.

There was supposed to be a ton more stuff that was in the game from Chapter 9 on, but it just seems like from that point, they ran out of time. Chapter 9 should've been the half-way point, or even the train mission with Prompto. Instead, it's more like 2/3 of the game with no real grasp of the world or the events around you.

It doesn't even really explain to you WHY Noct loves Luna, only that they knew each other as kids, and that the Oracle and the Lucian King are meant to be together in order to combat the Starscourge. And Noct hasn't even seen her in over 12 years. :wtf: Needed a better explanation on that.

I got so damn bored with the gem and item hunts. Just sending me over the map on three trips for fukkin 2000 exp, 1000 gil, and a fickin bracelet :martin:

And :shaq2: At a DLC Masamune...that is everything wrong with gaming today

In fact THIS GAME is. Tier one production studio cutting and rishing, day 1 multiple gigabyte updates, and dlc of traditional stuff.

I didn't even get why he spent 2 or 3 chapters crying over her. He was depressed to the point of not even being able to function and the whole time I'm looking at the screen confused like "Why is he crying? He didn't even really know her like that. Wasn't this an arranged marriage?" Also how the hell do they take away Ignis' eyes and not show you that through a battle cutscene!? Your immediate partners are the only characters that you ever establish even the slightest connection with as the player and they still don't let you witness everything that's going on with them. I remember seeing that he lost his eyes like "Yo what the hell happened to Ignis? He's a pretty cool character, why did they side panel him like that? "

I found a little bit more life in this game by loading my last save, and going back into the past by talking to the dog. Now I just go around finishing the dungeons I didn't complete and doing all of the legendary hunts. I don't plan on 100% this game. I just want to kill all of the bosses at least and then I'm putting this game on the shelf for the foreseeable future.

Wow, you are 100% right i never even thought of that. What a fukk you to ME for grinding to level 65 at that point for nothing. Getting the king weapons like that bad ass axe. FOR NOTHING.

That was really the nail in the coffin for me.
Once the game turned into a confusing mess with them stripping the combat and having you walk around talking to people for 4 chapters straight I was like "OK I get it, you guys are trying to add a bit more story to an already confusing and bare bones plot. But then when you get to that tower and you have no weapons at all except for the ring it hit me. "What the hell did I do all of that grinding for if they were just going to take away all of my weapons and gear and leave me with a stupid ring to defend myself. Then the final battle, as you go through the city, I don't know if you noticed but they designed it in a way that they wanted you to duck and sneak through alleys to get to the final boss. None of those enemies on your way through the kingdom are meant to be fought. So you sneak your way to the castle and fight Ifrit, which is basically just an HP sponge that you spam potions to fight and then summon shiva to finish it off. The final battle with Ardyn was complete BS hold R1 and O the hold time and heal when your HP gets low. Now strategy at all.
Don't even get me started on how pointless magic is in this game. I'm sure there are people who will be able to point out which items do what and how magic can be used to do amazing things, but they would only be further proving my point; this game is way too easy and it's designed that way on purpose. When you boot up the game it literally tells you this is a final fantasy for beginners and fans. What they didn't tell you is that there would be an incredible emphasis on beginners.

I think the reason why he was so heartbroken is maybe because they've always been in contact for so long? But even then, all we know is that Noct was inflicted with the Starscourge (was stated in the Ultimania), and Regis had to bring him to Tenebrae in order to save his life via the Oracle (Luna's mom, presumably). It seems at that point, that was when Noct and Luna met, and that's when the connection was made. I don't think it was ever said how long he was in Tenebrae for, but there could've been a lot of time in which they started developing feelings for each other. So when Luna ended up dying, I guess that makes sense. But even still, he hadn't seen her in 12 or so years, and it would've really been interesting to see Noct's thoughts about her, with him having an internal battle with whether he wants to be with her or not. You kinda see it happening, because any time they mention the wedding after the fall of Insomnia, Noct is kinda dismissal and shy about it, but you don't really have that as a plot point. I think THAT would've brought up the situation even more.

And as for Ignis, what happens to him will be in the DLC episode catered to him. The only reason I can think of for not showing it is because Square Enix ran out of time and couldn't put it in the game. So we'll be getting a deeper look into what the hell happened when he went off on his own in Altissia, but it's too bad we also couldn't have seen that happen ourselves right then and there.

I'm aware and I've not really died before either, except once when some sort of glitch happened. Thing is, I'm not even like trying to "grind" grind per say, just that I was curious of what ends some of the sidequests would lead to, with hopes that at least some would give some good lore/character development/scenes as well as accessing off-the-beaten-path dungeons, areas, bosses, weapons, etc. Moreso, the latter has been true than than the former for sure. But yeah, I never was grinding like in normal RPGs with that specific, "leveling up" thought process in place. However, fighting hunts, bosses and clearing side quests just so happens to net you craploads of experience points, perhaps even in excess, clearly. I don't even over grind with that mechanic in place of trying to do shyt for many "in-game" days and then level up an an expensive motel either, as I treat the squad and game akin to real life in that once it's late enough at night, I take them to the nears inn or camp and just sleep on a daily basis, lol. Plus lacking visibility in darkness and daemon spawn overload makes me not want to trek all night long anyways.

Another thing about that too, is that I didn't want to do a lot of post-game playing, as I usually don't for most games, especially big ass rpgs and doubtful of replays for any lengthy ass game either (anything over 20 hours is lengthy to me), so I wanted to get the most bang for my buck in my first playthru as it's quite liable to be my last, regardless of how much I would like the game otherwise. I've always been very curious about the royal arms and acquiring all of them, at the very least, before beating the game. Not that I definitively thought that it was necessary to do, as I had an inkling that it wasn't and seems to be confirmed by the lot of ya'll that it certainly isn't necessary.
