They need to do this NOW
In his Monday floor speech, Durbin argued that if opposition members wanted to use the tool to their advantage, it should be difficult for them to do so.
“If a senator insists on blocking the will of the Senate, he [or she] should have to pay some minimal price of being present. No more phoning it in. If your principles are that important, stand up for them, speak your mind, hold the floor, and show your resolve,” the 76-year-old lawmaker said, adding that he supported discussing “any proposal that ends the misuse of the filibuster.”
“If the Senate retains the filibuster, we must change the rules so that a senator who wants to bring our government to a standstill endures — at least — some discomfort in the process. We need new rules that actually promote debate.”
The democrats will lose the senate anyway. The group of voters and the politicians themselves aren't unified. Say what you will of republicans but their voters are passionate and unified and they'll do whatever it takes to win. Republicans will vote for a candidate they don't like if it can get their policies through. If the democrats put forth an unlikable candidate their voters will just stay home. See the 2016 election. Democratic voters would give up the supreme court if it meant voting for someone that didn't excite them. Republican voters would vote for whoever would give them the supreme court regardless. So you've fallen for McConnell's fear-mongering.
The Democrats are going to lose the Senate if they don't pass anything substantial, especially the voting rights bills. Basically, McConnell indirectly controls the senate, due to the filibuster.
There's nothing wrong with what he said. He said in that article that the filibuster should be eliminated but if it's not removed then they should make it harder for the minority (currently Republicans) to filibuster.I read an article that Moscow Mitch said he'll go "scorched earth" if Democrats did this:
How is this guy still in the Senate?

When the democrats remove the filibuster they will pay the price just like when Harry Reid did it for judicial nominees. It might look cool now but they’ll pay the price long term. That’s cool.
So you start passing stuff that people like. Dems tend not to do that. And when they do, they don’t celebrate it.
He is a fool. The republican party has for decades existed by getting voters to vote against their own self interest with little to no accountability. It hasn’t changed and it won’t. These people aren’t going to suddenly wake up out of this fog and demand that party do anything for them.
