That's only possible if they have the cap space.If the bulls were 18-20 mil under the cap then they could do that cuz they could just sign him if they couldn't agree on a sign n trade.

The Chicago Bulls got their man, trading their two first-round picks for sharp-shooting forward Doug McDermott, who was taken 11th by the Denver Nuggets.
The deal also will send Anthony Randolph to Chicago and a future second-round pick to Denver.

If Melo agreed in principle on July 1st we then go to the Knicks say you wanna do a sign and trade if so we negotiate. If no solution comes we sign him outright.
