I honestly feel like the people who don't like chapelle's humor just aren't fans of that particular type of humor in general.
The more cerebral political/social commentary type of humor.
Like when the spice girl went on the daily show and said to John Stewart " I don't get why people find you funny." He does political satire, He isnt funny in the traditional setup punchline system. The situations he talks about(Political hypocrisy, Etc) are funny. I'm not laughing at John Stewarts' jokes, I'm laughing at how much of a joke Donald Trump is because of something John Stewart pointed out to me.
I'm like ok everyone's entitled to their opinion but at the same time I can't help but think that maybe the jokes just go over your head because you're not educated or informed enough to pick up on it.
My Daughter is 4, and she think's Mickey Mouse is wayyyyyy funnier than Jimmy Fallon or Jimmy Kimmel. Obviousbly because she relates to physical humor more than pop culture references.
part of the reason I feel my theory is confirmed is because people in this thread constantly make references to comedians they think are funnier. And its usually somebody who does slap stick or impressions like Kevin Hart or Eddie Murphy, instead of social commentary.(Eddie can do social commentary too but ya'll always quote his basic jokes like his italian impression or his Bill cosby impression).
Dave Chapelle can make me laugh without being stupid, Kevin Hart can't do that. He has to have wild facial expressions and hand gestures to do so.
He even admits as much in this interview.
