I consider myself among the more informed and in touch fans of movies, not on this board, just in general....Yet embarrassingly enough, I slept on 'Ex Machina', until last night. It had been playing in the indie theater by me for weeks, and I finally read up on it, and after some positive reviews from a diverse crowd in my own life, I saw it. Beautifully directed, scored, written movie. Among the best of the year, if not near the top. I loved Oscar Issac's performance from his opening lines, and into his descent/reveal into depravity. Brilliant movie, was amazed at the questions it asked, themes it explored.....Technology, innovation, human nature to be cruel as well as kind, manipulation, seduction, the nature of attraction, men vs. women, feminism, misogony... loved the movie. I also attempt to style my house the same way, minimalistic, obviously not nearly as ornate, but the same kind of furniture and aesthetic is what I try for, so the set design was incredible to me too.

*Oscar Issacs 'tearing up the dance floor bro' and the following scene
* Both of the knife scenes
*The cinematography on the waterfall
*The lines 'You seem a little fukked up....' and the following ones were hilariously dark, though my audience seemed to under appreciate the comedic aspects of Nathan's character

man someone @ me, if I am fukking up like this again.

If you think you're lonely now, ohhh girl...
I don't believe that she left Caleb because she didn't "care" for him. I don't think it's that black and white. She was beyond the concept of merely being aware she was a robotic property -- meaning her behavior actually paralleled human behavior, which denotes being HIGHLY self-interested. Some argue that humans are wholly self-interested or should be (egoism vs. psychological egoism), but I'll leave it highly for now because I do think altruism exists (though I think it's rare). The fluidity of life doesn't always afford us the opportunity of keeping our interests or ideals static. Dependent upon the circumstance, we often have to choose one interest or another the in a situation, but that doesn't mean we don't still value the "non-selectee." Moreover, given the right scenario, we would choose the "non-selectee" over other interests or as standalone. She didn't leave Caleb because she didn't care for him. She left him because it was the best option in regards to fulfilling her self-interests (e.g., going into the world and exploring it, no one else knowing she was a robot, etc.) at that time.

Look at the main humans in this: none of them ever act outside of their own self interests the whole movie.

Caleb isn't trying to free Ava on some "just because" shyt. He wants to be with her romantically and physically. He's trying to satisfy a personal desire. He doesn't start there, but that's where he ends up. And once he is there he is willing to do anything to achieve it.

Nathan gets Caleb to do his test under false pretenses and is a schemer from the outset. He uses anything he possesses and Caleb as solely a means to an end. Whether it's destroying the robots to make better ones, lying to Caleb about essentially everything, utilizing cellphones illegally, getting all kinds of data on people via their online searches, and so forth. He had his goals and he'd use or do anything to achieve them.

She was just like them. She was very human.

Movie was dope just finished it. Ava wasn't turning her back on the geek. He just wasn't of use to her anymore because she ultimately gained her freedom. His dumbass was still in awe of the whole thing. I think the most powerful thing in this movie is how Oscar foreshadows what if his type was black girls. There is a reason why the geeks falls in love/lust immediately with the robot. Because of his porn desires. What is really f'ed up is that no one would really care if he died because he had no immediately family to search after him. Oscar created the geeks weakness. So it was a true test to the geek if he could be a true man about it. House money Oscar found it hilarious but man.... He shoulda actually thought the geek was emotionally weak. He truly underestimated that aspect. He was outta touch with that part of his humanity and he took it too lightly. That's how Ava got to work one over on both of them. I would like to see a sequel. Funny how the helicopter did pick her up like it was nothing. And Ava the actor maybe the new bae. Not the robot :troll:

Enjoyed the movie, thought it was dope and the ending caught me off guard. My issue was I'm not understanding how kyoko was convinced to do what she did and her actual relevance through out the film in this context.

She was a AI being.

They CAN be convinced to do things just like you or me.

I think they did a good job to show her unhappiness throughout the film...he treated her like shyt.

no wonder she went the route she went.

Oscar Issac has the ability to have you perplexed to whether he is being sincere in his scenes or faking it.....
I remember wondering in his scenes with Gosling in Drive if he was:

Thanks for helping out my girl with the car and playing with my son, he was kinda down:myman:

or

Daddy's home, I better not catch you close to my girl or kid again:ufdup:

This scene had me like :francis::patrice::pachaha::deadmanny:

shyt was so random

Caleb: You tore up her drawing :damn:

Nathan: I'm about to tear up this dance floor :jawalrus:

:stylin:

Just saw it last night

The ending had me like :mjlol:

Simps gonna simp brehs:mjlol:

but I knew something was up with the Asian chick that was serving them. I called it earlier in the movie.. I was like that bytch is a robot. And then when he talked about all the failed AI attempts before AVA I definitely knew. Didn't know it would end that way though. Oscar was fukked up/crazy but he wasn't stupid.

When he said "what if she was pretending to like you:mjpls:"

shyt had me like:ohhh::ohhh::ohhh:

I started thinking she was a droid when Caleb mentioned the magic trick, talking about having a pretty assistant distract you from what's really going on, that she's in on it.
